South Carolina is home to two types of vultures: the turkey vulture and the black vulture. The turkey vulture has a red featherless head while the black vulture has a black or gray featherless head. They are nature's cleanup crew and eat dead things that other animals won't touch. Turkey vultures can smell a dead animal (carrion) from miles away, whereas the black vulture does not have as keen of a sense of smell. Black vultures will often follow turkey vultures and aggressively take over a dead animal from the turkey vulture. Vultures lack an actual voice box so they can't sing. Their vocalizations are limited to hisses and grunts. They also don't build nests but rather lay their eggs on the ground, in caves, hollowed out trees, among rocks or in abandoned buildings. Their primary defense mechanism is to spew projectile vomit at would-be threats. In some regions of North America, vultures are referred to as buzzards.
