Have you ever wondered how banks know when a customer is being scammed?

Individuals are often targeted by sophisticated scams designed to exploit trust, fear, or loneliness. Common examples include romance scams, where a fraudster builds an online relationship and eventually asks for money; tech support scams, where criminals claim a computer has been infected with a virus; and government imposter scams, where someone pretends to represent the IRS, Social Security Administration, or another agency and demands immediate payment.

These scams can be very convincing. Fraudsters may spend weeks or even months building trust with a victim before requesting money.

To help detect potential fraud, banks use transaction monitoring systems that look for account activity that appears out of the ordinary.

For example, a customer who typically pays local bills and makes routine purchases may suddenly attempt to wire a large amount of money to someone in another country whom they have never sent money to before. These types of unexpected changes can trigger alerts for further review.

When suspicious activity is identified, trained bank personnel will take a closer look and, in some cases, contact the customer to confirm the transaction. They may ask additional questions to better understand the purpose of the payment and determine whether the customer may be the target of a scam.

These safeguards can make a significant difference. In some cases, they have helped prevent fraud victims from losing retirement savings, emergency funds, or other assets accumulated over a lifetime. A banker may uncover warning signs that the customer had not previously recognized.

While no system can prevent every scam, these monitoring programs provide an important layer of protection. By identifying unusual activity and encouraging timely intervention, banks help protect customers from financial exploitation and reduce the risk that scammers will succeed in stealing hard-earned savings.

How important is your personal credit when applying for a business loan?

Creditworthiness is an important factor in determining business loan eligibility and financing terms. Depending on the business structure and type of financing requested, lenders may review both the business's credit history and the owner's personal credit history.

While there is no universal minimum credit score for every financing program, stronger credit profiles often provide access to more favorable loan options. Lenders evaluate credit history to assess payment performance, existing obligations, and overall financial responsibility.

However, credit is only one piece of the picture. A lower credit score does not automatically mean a loan application will be declined. Lenders also look at factors such as the business's income and cash flow, how long it has been operating, the owner's industry experience, and any assets that may be available as collateral. By considering multiple factors, lenders can gain a more complete understanding of the business's overall financial health and ability to repay a loan.

Every lending situation is unique, which is why credit history is evaluated alongside other strengths of the business rather than as the sole deciding factor.

Today’s banks operate on a high-tech battleground. As financial technology evolves, so do criminal tactics.

The rise of digital banking, real-time payments, cryptocurrencies, and cross-border financial platforms has created new opportunities for innovation, but it has also introduced increasingly sophisticated money laundering and financial crime schemes. In response, Bank Secrecy Act (BSA) and Anti-Money Laundering (AML) departments have transformed from traditional compliance functions into highly specialized intelligence and risk management operations.

Sophisticated analytics tools allow investigators to trace transactional relationships across wallets, identify hidden connections between bad actors, and follow the movement of illicit funds through multiple layers of confusion.

But technology is only part of the solution.

Behind every alert are trained professionals who investigate concerns, follow strict regulations, and work to ensure the financial system remains trustworthy and secure.

While customers may never see this work happening, it plays a critical role in protecting their accounts, their communities, and the broader economy. Every day, these teams help ensure that banks remain safe places to save, spend, and grow their money, while making it harder for criminals to profit from illegal activity.

You already know an important step for business growth, property acquisition, expansion, and more can be securing the right financing. If you have been thinking about adding financing to your business, here is what you should know about Twin City Bank’s business loan application:

One of the most important qualifications for a business loan is an established operating history. Applicants must have a minimum of two years in business to be considered for financing.

Why? Financial transparency is a key component of the loan approval process. Lenders use financial records to assess the overall health of the business and determine whether the requested financing aligns with the company’s cash flow and operational performance.

Applicants are typically asked to provide at least:
✔️ Business tax returns for the previous two years
✔️ Profit and loss statements
✔️ Business balance sheets
✔️ Business bank statements
✔️ Year-to-date financial statements when applicable.
