A sense of justice thanks to DNA for Keith, Jennifer, Jesse, and Sophia Caneiro.

In 2018, the lives of the Caneiro family were stolen in a devasting act of violence. This week, the person responsible was sentenced to four consecutive life terms, bringing a measure of accountability after years of legal proceedings.

Bode Technology was honored to support investigators by performing extensive DNA testing on crime scene evidence, ultimately helping link one of the victims’ DNA to items recovered from the suspect’s home.

We are grateful to collaborate with law enforcement and forensic professionals working tirelessly to seek answers and pursue justice on behalf of victims. We hope the suspect's sentencing brings some relief to those who loved Keith, Jennifer, Jesse and Sophia.

Paul Caneiro was sentenced for the murders of his brother, Keith, 50, sister-in-law, Jennifer, 45, nephew Jesse, 11, and niece Sophia, 8.

For survivors of sexual violence, coming forward often requires extraordinary courage. The path toward justice can be long, difficult, and uncertain—especially when trauma, fear, and coercion are part of the story. But every survivor deserves the opportunity to be heard, and every case deserves the strongest possible evidentiary foundation.

In Washington, D.C., two women sought help after enduring repeated sexual abuse in separate incidents connected to the same individual. According to federal prosecutors, investigators worked to piece together the evidence, ultimately leading to a jury finding a D.C. man guilty on multiple charges, including first-degree sexual abuse against both victims.

As investigators worked to build the case, forensic DNA evidence helped strengthen the evidentiary picture. Bode provided critical testing of the sexual assault kits collected from both victims, linking the suspect’s DNA to key evidence. Working alongside investigators and prosecutors, that testing helped support the case as it moved through the justice process.

While no verdict can erase harm, cases like this reflect what is possible when the courage of survivors, investigative persistence, and science come together in pursuit of accountability. Every tested kit represents more than evidence—it represents a person, a story, and the opportunity to move a case forward

Maurice Spears, 34, was found guilty of six counts of first-degree sexual abuse and other charges.

As Rapid DNA technology continues to expand beyond booking stations and into crime scene investigations, evidence collection plays an increasingly important role in how DNA can be used throughout a case.

How can agencies collect evidence in a way that supports both Rapid DNA processing and traditional laboratory analysis?

600 Sexual Assault Kits Tested in Months and a State Lab Getting Back on Track Thanks to Outsourcing

When forensic laboratories face overwhelming backlogs, survivors are left waiting for answers and investigators are left waiting for leads. That’s why public-private partnerships matter.

Authorities in Queensland, Australia recently credited a two-year outsourcing partnership with Bode Technology for helping clear approximately 600 sexual assault kits in just months while enabling the local laboratory to reset operations, strengthen protocols, and rebuild capacity.

By streamlining international evidence transfer, testing workflows, and reporting processes, Bode was able to support rapid turnaround times while working alongside local forensic and law enforcement partners focused on long-term improvement.

We are proud to support agencies and laboratories as they work to deliver answers for survivors, advance investigations, and strengthen the future of forensic DNA testing.

Because reducing backlogs isn’t just about numbers — it’s about restoring momentum, providing answers, and a chance at justice.

After clearing 600 samples linked to r**e investigations, the state laboratory director is confident new cases could soon be turned around within two weeks.

In 1986, 16-year-old Deanna Ogg’s life was taken far too soon. In the years that followed, her case saw both conviction and exoneration—leaving critical questions unanswered and her family still waiting for the truth.

After the wrongful conviction was overturned, the case once again became an open investigation. For decades, investigators remained committed to finding answers. The TX Rangers were one of the law enforcement agencies dedicated to helping solve this case. The Rangers were one of the first agencies in the country to secure a SAKI grant specifically to help try and solve cold case r**e-homicides and serial r**es, via Familial DNA searches and FIGG, where no CODIS hits had occurred.

Nearly 40 years after Deanna’s death, that persistence and collaboration led to a breakthrough.

Working alongside the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, the Rangers and their partners, Bode supported investigators at every stage of the case. From traditional and innovative DNA testing to support CODIS searches, to advanced SNP analysis and forensic genetic genealogy to generate new investigative leads, each step helped move the case forward. Most recently, expedited testing was used to confirm the suspect’s identity prior to arrest.

This case underscores both the power and responsibility of forensic DNA. It played a role in correcting a wrongful conviction—and, years later, in helping identify a new suspect.

An arrest has now been made, bringing renewed hope for accountability in a case that has spanned generations. Our thoughts are with Deanna’s loved ones as this case moves forward.

Authorities in Montgomery County are crediting the advancements in DNA technology and genealogy for the arrest of a man in connection with the 1986 murder of a 16-year-old girl.

Today, we’re honored to stand alongside the Kaylee Goncalves Foundation, doing business as Murder Has a Name (MHAN), in a shared commitment to helping law enforcement solve unsolved homicide cases.

Founded in honor of Kaylee Goncalves, MHAN is working to ensure more agencies have access to the forensic DNA testing needed to generate leads and bring answers to families. Through this partnership, Bode Technology will support MHAN-referred cases with discounted DNA analysis, along with one pro bono case each year.

This work is rooted in strength, purpose, and a belief that every case deserves the opportunity for answers.

Lorton, VA— April, 27, 2026 — The Kaylee Goncalves Foundation, doing business as Murder Has a Name (MHAN), a newly established nonprofit based in Idaho, today announced a partnership with Bode Technology, a leading provider of forensic DNA analysis services, to support law enforcement agencies w...

NIJ’s Director La Vigne and Director of the Office of Investigative and Forensic Sciences, Lucas Zarwell, conducted a congressional briefing on March 28, 2024 to share how advances in DNA technology help identify decedents and solve cold cases, and how forensic DNA analyses also supports the mission of the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System (NamUs).

The panel included representatives from NIJ grantees Bode Technology and the University of Tennessee, Knoxville Forensic Anthropology Center, as well as the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation and NamUs, who discussed how they generate and use NIJ-sponsored forensic research in the interests of safety and justice.
