I got a scam call today. It's called the Say "YES" Scam.
Here's the red flag everyone should learn to recognize.
My phone rang and a caller claiming to be from a financial institution asked, "Am I speaking with Ken Calof?" I said, "Speaking." Then the caller pressed me: "I need you to answer yes."
I hung up.
That was the "Say Yes" scam, also known as the "Can you hear me?" scam. The Better Business Bureau, the FTC, and even the U.S. Senate Aging Committee have all issued warnings about it.
Here's how it works. The caller asks a simple question designed to get you to say one word: "yes." Common openers include "Can you hear me?", "Is this [your name]?", or "Do you have a moment to talk?" Often the caller hangs up soon after you respond, because capturing your "yes" on a recorded line is the entire goal.
Why does that matter? That recording can be used to claim you authorized a charge or signed up for a service you never agreed to. If you dispute it later, the scammer counters that they have your consent on tape. At a minimum, your answer confirms that your number is live and belongs to a real person, which invites more scam calls down the road.
To be fair, the BBB and AARP report few or no confirmed cases of people losing money from the "yes" alone, so this is usually a setup step rather than the final blow. But it's a real tactic worth recognizing, and an easy one to shut down.
A few simple ways to protect yourself:
Don't answer numbers you don't recognize. If it's urgent, they'll leave a message.
If you do pick up and a stranger asks a yes-or-no question, don't say "yes." Try "Who's calling?" or simply hang up.
Never give personal or financial information to an unexpected caller.
Review your bank, card, and phone statements for charges you don't recognize.
Report suspicious calls to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov and to the BBB Scam Tracker.
The safest response is also the simplest: when in doubt, hang up. Politeness isn't worth your peace of mind.
Have you gotten one of these calls? I'd be curious to hear how you handled it. 👇
