A UK consumer test of 20 popular smartphone apps in July 2025 found that 15 of 20 asked for precise location, and 16 of 20 asked to draw over other apps. Those two grants are where the trouble usually starts.

Our advice is simple: go through the list, revoke location and microphone wherever the app does not need them, and turn off auto-start for anything you rarely open. Change one at a time, so you can see if a feature breaks.

Here is what matters:
• No federal one-click cancel rule applies now, after a court set it aside in 2025.
• California requires a notice before a trial ends, with the price and how to cancel.
• Utah wants that notice at least 3 days before expiry, and Louisiana follows in 2027.
• If a warning email did arrive, the missing-notice argument mostly falls away.

Here is the line sellers would rather not quote: after 18 February 2027, a sealed device that fails the adult-removal test cannot be sold in the EU.

There are 125 days left, counting from 16 October 2026. Two things worth knowing:

- Removal is judged on an adult with no battery-replacement knowledge, not a technician.
- Exemptions exist, but each one needs an individual assessment with evidence.

So replaceable batteries stop being a courtesy. If a seller says a device is exempt, ask to see the assessment.

If you use the Gemini free tier, here is what changed on 9 October, and how much of it is actually confirmed.

- Google's help page says free users get Flash-Lite for most prompts under Auto.
- Switching Auto off locks every reply to Flash-Lite, so it will not get you a stronger model.
- Press reports say Flash and Pro are gone from the free tier entirely. Google has not said that itself.
- The same goes for AI Plus losing Pro: press-reported only. Look at your own model picker before you pay.

Google publishes multipliers, never a quota, so nobody outside can tell you the exact free allowance. AI Plus holders, hold off on cancelling until Google's email names your change date.

Headset plugged in, Windows says Code 10, and there is no sound? The October patch will not rescue you.

KB5127648 landed on 13 October 2026, but this USB audio fault began on 8 September. That is 38 days open, with 0 of 2 patches curing it.

So skip the waiting and try these in order:

- Unplug the USB headset or DAC and plug it into another port.
- Disable and re-enable it in Device Manager. It costs nothing.
- If only surround sound is dead, switch the device to a stereo format.
- Keep uninstalling the October update as the last resort, since it may not undo a fault that began in September.

Here is how the safe account scam gets past you: the caller ID shows your bank's real number, because the caller chooses what your screen displays. Nothing about that display is proof.

A few things worth remembering:

- A matching caller ID proves nothing, and neither does a caller who reads your balance back to you.
- Money you send yourself is the hardest to get back. Refund rules mostly cover transfers you did not authorise, and in this scam you approve each one.
- The FTC's June 2026 release on 2025 reports puts losses to imposter scams at $3.5 billion, and that figure is capped only by victims' balances.

The call feels real because it is built to feel real. That is the whole trick.

So the rule is simple: if a call asks you to move money, hang up and dial the number on your card or in your bank's app.

If you live in California, there is now one place to tell every registered data broker to delete your data. It is called DROP, and brokers had to start processing those requests on 1 August 2026.

Worth knowing before you relax: a deletion request is not a full wipe. Exempt records can stay, and identifiers a broker cannot match to you can stay too. The easy fix is to open the status screen afterwards and look, instead of assuming everything was erased.
