Nine in the evening, the geyser is on, the AC is running, and the box on the wall is quietly keeping time. That clock is the part nobody explained.

What the smart meter shift actually means for your bill:

- 7.24 crore meters were installed as of 30 June 2026, out of 20.33 crore sanctioned, so plenty of homes have not been touched yet.
- Evening power gets dearer and daytime power gets cheaper, inside a window your state names and caps at 8 hours.
- Only the energy charge moves. Fixed charges stay put, so savings have to come from shifting when you run things.
- If your bill jumped right after installation, that is usually estimated readings ending, not the tariff.

Have you looked for a commissioning date on your last bill?

https://www.tsimtsoum.com/2026/08/what-indias-smart-meters-and-peak-hour.html

Time of day tariffs will price Indian evenings above daytime power, but only after your smart meter is commissioned. Here is the household maths.

Two streaming price increases landed ten days apart this month, and almost all the coverage focused on the wrong number.

Peacock raised every tier on August 18. Apple followed on August 28 with Apple TV and Apple One Individual.

Here is the part nobody put on the front page:

- Peacock set one fixed cutover in September for its whole base, so you move at your next bill after it.
- Apple tells existing subscribers about 30 days before the higher charge posts, tied to your own signup date, so your deadline is not the same as anyone else's.
- Annual and promo rates only hold until renewal. That defers the increase, it does not avoid it.
- Cancelling after your renewal has posted will not get the money back.

So the useful thing to do tonight is boring: open your account settings and write down your renewal dates.

Do you know yours off the top of your head?

Your AI assistant can now legally shop for you. It still cannot pay for you, at least not here.

A US appeals court ruled on 4 August that when you send an AI agent to a shopping site, you are the one visiting the store, not the software company. That ended one long fight. It did not touch the one that matters for Indian shoppers.

A few things worth knowing before you point an agent at a checkout page:

- The ruling protects a specific setup: an agent running on your own machine, in your own logged-in session. Other designs were left out on purpose.
- Retailers can still ban automated access in their terms and close your account. No judge required.
- India's payment rules require your bank to warn you a full day before any recurring debit. An agent that just found your shoes cannot wait that long.
- The protocol meant to fix this is still in consultation. Nothing has been published.

Best approach for now: let the agent hunt and fill the cart, then check the total and press the button yourself.

Have you tried letting an AI do your shopping yet?

https://www.ask-kabbalist.com/2026/08/courts-cleared-ai-shopping-agents.html

The Ninth Circuit freed AI shopping agents from CFAA liability, but India's RBI e-mandate rules leave no payment rail an agent can actually use.

Noticed your streaming bill didn't go up this year? Mine didn't either. Turns out that's not the good news it looks like.

Ampere Analysis tracked Netflix, Disney+ and Amazon pricing from August 2023 to July 2026, and the slowdown is real: the average annual increase dropped from 24% to 14%. Here's the part nobody put in the headline:

- The gap between ad-free and ad-supported plans grew from $4.53 to $5.35
- About 60% of new sign-ups now pick the plan with ads
- Netflix's advertising business is tracking near $3 billion this year, roughly double last year

Prices stopped rising because people started cancelling, and a downgrade is worth more to a streamer than a lost customer. So instead of charging more, they made the cheaper option the obvious one and moved the money to ads and extra member fees.

Worth two minutes tonight: open your account settings and look at what ad-free costs above the ad plan. If that gap is bigger than a price rise you'd have accepted, you already paid the increase. You just paid it as a choice.

What are you paying for ad-free right now?

Is the price on your screen the same one your neighbour sees? Increasingly, no.

The FTC has proposed making retailers tell you when a price was built from your own personal data. Here is what stood out.

• There is a real difference between dynamic pricing, which moves with the whole market, and personalized pricing, which moves with you specifically.
• The data feeding it goes well beyond purchase history. Precise location, browsing history, abandoned carts, even how your mouse moves on the page.
• Retailers report revenue gains of 2% to 5% where they use it, so this is not a fringe experiment.
• And the big one: the proposal does not ban any of it. It only requires disclosure.

That last part is the weak spot. Knowing a price was personalized does not tell you whether you got the expensive version of it.

Worth trying this week: check something you buy regularly while signed in to the app, then check it again in a private browser window with location off. Write both numbers down.

Have you ever spotted two different prices for the same thing?

Quick one for anyone still running Windows 10: the deadline you are probably planning around has moved. Microsoft pushed consumer security updates out to 12 October 2027, a full year later than the date most articles still quote, and did it quietly.

Worth knowing before you spend money on a new PC:

• Enrollment is free if you switch on Windows Backup settings sync
• One licence covers up to 10 devices on the same Microsoft account
• You get security fixes only, so an app crash or a driver bug on Windows 10 is now yours to solve
• Plenty of eligible PCs never show the "Enroll now" button, usually because the machine is behind on updates or signed in with a local account

Open Windows Update tonight and check which side of this you are on. Are you enrolled, upgrading to 11, or replacing the machine?

Microsoft quietly pushed Windows 10 ESU coverage to 12 October 2027, so here is how to confirm enrollment and fix a missing Enroll now button.

Here is a cost line most businesses did not see coming this year.

On 12 August 2026 the EU's Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation started to apply, and seven US states already run their own packaging EPR programs. Recyclability, labelling and producer registration are enforceable right now. The recycled content rules are deferred to 2030.

What makes this expensive is not the paperwork. It is that the fees are eco-modulated, so the format you ship decides what you pay:

- Hard-to-recycle formats like multi-layer film sit at the top of the fee schedule.
- Corrugated and aluminium sit near the bottom.
- Resource Recycling's April 2026 look at Colorado's interim base dues put more than $1.50 a pound between the two ends.
- Late or bounced filings carry penalties measured per day, not per season.

So the cheapest pack on the purchase order can quietly become the most expensive one on the year.

Has your packaging spend changed shape yet this year?

https://www.hzympack.com/2026/08/packaging-epr-in-2026-what-ppwr-and.html

EU PPWR applied on 12 August 2026 and seven US states now bill packaging producers, with eco-modulated EPR fees decided by the format you ship.

Buying an AC in the clearance season? Check one thing before the salesman starts talking.

India's 2026 BEE revision moved every efficiency band up a notch. Hardware that earned five stars under the old table now prints four. Nothing inside the machine changed, only the yardstick.

And stickers are never reprinted. So the discounted carton at the back of the showroom may still be flashing a star count it would no longer earn.

Three things worth doing:

• Photograph the label period, the small block of years at the bottom of the BEE sticker. That is what dates the claim above it.
• Write down the annual power consumption in kWh per year for every unit on your shortlist. Multiplied by your own tariff, that is your real running cost.
• Ask whether it is current production or warehouse stock, and get it in writing on the invoice.

The old rule was to buy the highest star rating you can afford. That only pays back if you actually run the thing. Light seasonal use rarely earns back the premium.

What is your electricity rate per unit? That number decides more than the stars do.

https://www.c-waybio.com/2026/08/bee-ac-star-ratings-reset-2026-read-kwh.html

India's 2026 BEE reset knocked a star off every AC rating, so judge a unit by its annual kWh number and printed label period, not by its stars.

If you saw the news that Android is killing sideloading on 30 September, take a breath. That date does not apply to India.

Here is the honest version:

- The 30 September 2026 deadline covers Brazil, Indonesia, Singapore and Thailand. India comes later, in 2027.
- Sideloading still works. The switch just moved into Developer options.
- Before your first install from an unverified developer, there is now a one-time 24-hour wait.
- Google is checking who the developer is, not what the app does.
- The app stores that come preloaded on most phones sold here are all part of the programme.

That 24-hour pause is quietly clever. It does nothing to stop you installing something you actually wanted, and it wrecks the timing of anyone pressuring you to install a file this very minute.

Do you still sideload apps, or have you stopped bothering?

You have probably seen the headline: Indian workers can now withdraw 100% of their provident fund. It sounds like good news. The wording hides something.

Here is the plain version:

• The EPF Scheme 2026 keeps 25% of your eligible balance locked in the account.
• So the 100% everyone is quoting is really 75% of what you have.
• If you leave a job, a full premature settlement now waits 12 months. It used to be 2.
• Small mercy: claims up to Rs 5 lakh still settle automatically with no paperwork, and the locked money keeps earning 8.25%.

None of this is a scandal. Forcing a floor under the account genuinely does stop people emptying their PF at every job change. It just costs the most to whoever has the least saved.

Have you checked what your eligible balance actually says?
