Chattel holiday party last week, again celebrating in the New Year, apparently this has become our thing! Lots of good food, good drink, good cheer, and good white elephant gift exchange. After all the stealing, Leilani still ended up with the book she wanted, so good generosity as well!

En route to the Breed Street Shaul this morning, I passed one of my very favorite buildings in Los Angeles. I’ve never seen it and had to grab a photo out the car window. Turns out the amazing 1934-35 LA DWP branch office at 2417 Daly Street in Lincoln Heights was designed by master architect S. Charles Lee (also known as Simon Charles Levi). The “show brings on the sidewalk” architect also designed my maternal family’s remarkable 1937 Le Roy Diamond Co at 633 S Broadway (second photo from a family scrapbook).

A life changing event occurs 30 years ago today. These are photos of my 4 Runner trapped and released from under my collapsed carport in Sherman Oaks. The car survived, the wood framed carport was demolished and replaced with a canvas awning, and I went to work for SHPO Representative Christy McAvoy at on Northridge Earthquake recovery. From the report I wrote in 1995 on the Northridge Earthquake recovery:

An earthquake centered under the suburban community of Northridge in the San Fernando Valley shook the greater Los Angeles area at 4:31 a.m. on Monday, January 17, 1994. The main shock which registered a magnitude 6.7 on the Richter scale was followed by thousands of aftershocks including a magnitude 5.3 on March 20, 1994. Unlike the magnitude 7. l of the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake, centered approximately ninety-five kilometers from downtown San Francisco in a sparsely populated area of the Santa Cruz mountains, the epicenter of the Northridge earthquake was directly beneath a heavily populated community of houses, apartment buildings, shopping malls, hospitals, schools and a university campus. Neighborhoods near the epicenter suffered devastating loss of life and property, but bridges and buildings up to sixty kilometers away were also damaged. The greatest peak ground acceleration, measured seven kilometers from the epicenter, had a horizontal acceleration of 1.82g and a vertical acceleration of 1.18g, far exceeding present building code requirements which are based on an acceleration of 0.4g. At the request of Governor Wilson, the Counties of Los Angeles, Orange, and Ventura were declared a disaster area by President Clinton. It is estimated that the Northridge Earthquake will be the most costly disaster in the history of the United States.

So excited to share that on Monday night, the Santa Monica Landmarks Commission unanimously approved the certificate of appropriateness for the Cultural Uses Campus of the Ocean Avenue Project. We started our work nearly 14 years ago and we’re so pleased to see this remarkable project reach this important milestone. The two model photographs show how the two City Landmarks, a 1906 Queen Anne single family residence designated in 2001 and a 1926 Spanish Colonial Revival mixed use building with four flats and one ground floor retail space designated in 2004, are integrated into a new museum building. Thank you design architect Gehry Partners and historic architect .create for your thoughtful collaboration! Look for completion in 2027 and opening of the art and architecture museum featuring the work of the master architect Frank Gehry. The ever humble FOG shared with the Coastal Commission last month, “My stuff will be in the basement.” Could it get any better than this! To quote former Landmarks Commission Margaret Bach, “Rarely does the opportunity come along to see two Santa Monica Landmarked structures to be rehabilitated and adaptively reused in an iconic development project, a project that will be enjoyed and celebrated not just locally, but worldwide.” Thank you City commissioners, staff and consultant and applicant team members, and, did I say how I really feel, yippee!

Early in my career I was a project planner for the Community Redevelopment Agency of the City of Los Angeles and was responsible for a project called Broadway Spring Center at 333 S Spring Street in downtown. The project included construction of an approximately 1200 car parking garage, ground floor retail and a pocket park on the Broadway frontage. Encouraged by my colleague Richard Rowe, I reached out to public historian and urban planner Dolores Hayden at UCLA and her The Power of Place organization. The resulting four works of public art, two on-site, are widely acclaimed for commemorating the life of Biddy Mason, nurse, midwife, philanthropist and former enslaved person. My collection of materials from the project including one of the artist’s books and a poster, the two off-site artworks, along with associated ephemera are now available in the collection of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, see link in bio. I’m humbled and honored to have made this donation.

Making steady progress on of the Plaza Fountain in Orange, shown here with Sean MacLean from selecting appropriate glaze in the “pumpkin” range for custom replacement tile to be installed by legacy Orange tile installer and with cleaning and conservation treatments by with completion expected in early 2024.
