I started working at age 14. I’m not entirely sure it was legal.

I was a paperboy in the Bay Area and my “boss” would pick my friends and me up after school and drive us half an hour somewhere to go door-to-door selling newspaper subscriptions.

I made $7. Not $7 per hour, but $7 per subscription sold.

Most days, I spent 2 hours to sell one subscription.

That’s $3.50 per hour.

Here’s a fun math hack. A quick hand to calculate annual salary using hourly rate is to double the hourly rate and add a “k” to it.

If you make $15 per hour, double it, and you get $30. Now add a ‘“k”. That’s $30k per year.

What’s the annual salary of $1,000 per hour? Double it and add a “k”, or to make it easier in this case, add three zeroes. The final product is $2M per year.

How do you make $1,000 per hour?

By staying in your lane…

Start by assigning a certain value to various types of tasks.

There are tasks for any business that you can pay someone $10-$30 per hour to complete. An EA, VA, or AI might come to mind for these.

Then, there are tasks that are worth $100 per hour.

Most of the work you and I do could fall into this category. Regardless of industry, we’re practitioners, and a $100 per hour task is something we’re skilled at, creating great value for the business.

Most people won’t get to $1000 per hour tasks because they get stuck in the $10 - $100 per hour tasks.

What’s a $1,000 per hour task?

These are business tasks that can help increase revenue by 10x.

For example, a small business owner’s $1,000 per hour task might be forming strategic partnerships, creating a new product or service, or increasing sales for her company.

Employees who do similar $100 per hour tasks might service smaller clients, while her $1000 per hour tasks would be spent on larger contracts exclusively.

Or perhaps her employees could fulfill all the contracts while she solely focuses on business development.

There can be many types of $1000 per hour task depending on your role, company, skillset, and industry. The key is to differentiate $10, $100, and $1000 per hour tasks.

What are your $10-$30 and $100 per hour tasks?

What's your $1000?

Previous generations, such as our parents, traded time for money.

That was the usual formula. They worked for 40 hours a week and got paid every month or every two weeks.

The modern lifestyle looks more like work 60+ hours (more time) for a bigger paycheck (more money). But the formula is still the same.

A wealthy mindset swaps that around. Instead of trading time for money, trade money for time.

Here are a few questions to ponder:

🤔How often are you putting money into something that will save you time in the future?

🤔What can you spend money on to improve your skills so you can provide more value and earn MORE money in LESS time?

🤔How can you use money to speed up your progress towards your goals?

Here are a few examples of trading money for time:

💡Enroll in a bootcamp, certification, or course that will boost your skillset. This might cost you anywhere from a few hundred to a few thousand upfront, but you’ll “buy back” time later if you want to reduce your work hours from 80 to 40.

💡Hire an executive business coach that will help you achieve results faster… AND with more happiness. It’s not cheap, but you can void years of stress and frustration.

💡Hire an executive assistant. Entrepreneurs often wait too long to hire one. An EA will make your life easier and help you focus on what you do best.

💡Get a housecleaner. This might seem a bit trivial, but how many of us are too frugal to imagine what we can do with the time and energy we get back.

If you do the math, you’re getting much more than just time.

If you’re a business owner, you might aim for $1M in revenue. By yourself, you might reach that in 3-5 years.

But what if you could do it in 1-2 years with guidance?

You’re not only cutting 2-3 years off.

💥You are sparing yourself a lot of stress and pain that you could have avoided. Learning is part of life, but some things can be learned in other ways.

💥Your personal habits, family relationships, and overall well-being would be better.

💥Getting to $1M by year 2 means you’re growing and thriving in years 3-5 instead of feeling like you’re pushing a boulder up a mountain alone.

Don’t trade time for money, but trade money for time

Where do you put your trust in terms of your financial security?

This might sound like an odd question. Bear with me for a minute.

I am a huge believer in believing in yourself.

Perhaps this is the deepest power for where you place your trust - in your ability to generate financial security.

I’d like to propose an alternative.

Studies show that trusting in something bigger than ourselves, a higher power if you will, has many benefits.

Whether that’s God, The Universe, energy (from quantum physics), or vibrations from String Theory, those who believe in a higher power tend to be happier, less depressed and anxious than those who don’t.

How does this help us with financial security?

Trust in a higher power can benefit you in a few ways:

👆You believe you’re taken care of on a grander scale. This gives you comfort and confidence. You don’t feel isolated or overwhelmed. You work hard, but you also know that you can’t control everything. You let go of the stress that comes from thinking that you have to do it all by yourself. This stress can make you more anxious, cynical, and depressed. But if you believe that the Universe is on your side, you can relax and have faith that your efforts will pay off soon.

👆You’ll start to see connections and opportunities you didn’t see before. Stress and pressure are not our friend. They short circuit creativity and performance. But when you trust that the Universe is on your side, the world starts to open up to you. Maybe nothing has really changed, but everything feels different. It could be that just by trusting and relaxing, you’re attracting new energy and vibrations that create something new.

👆You’ll be okay with whatever happens, embracing acceptance instead of resistance. Whatever comes your way will be what is. Acceptance will lead you to your next innovation. Resistance will keep you stuck. Trusting the Universe provides the best outcome for a narrative that is empowering instead of one that makes you a victim.

What if you trusted a higher power instead of yourself, while still believing that you have the power to shape your future? How would your life be with true financial security?

I am a recovering high performer.

I was made captain of the track team in 8th grade. In high school I was often first to finish a test or essay.

At age 20, I was offered a full-time corporate job even before finishing college.

I excelled in my career and people often came to me for advice and direction.

So much has been written about high performers. So what’s the issue?

If you’re a high performer like me, you might recognize some of these traits shared by Jason Jaggard of Novus Global:

:x: Resistance to feedback: Feedback can threaten our identity as a high performer. We’re already doing great, so why do I need feedback?

:x:Overwhelmed and bored: Our plates are full (we’re used to a high workload) AND we’re bored because we’re not growing.

:x:Resentment towards others: We could develop a sense of frustration when our teammates aren’t performing at a similar level.

:x:Jealousy: We could also get a bit emotional if we see others surpassing us.

This is because the primary question high performers ask themselves is “How can I be the best?”

Anything that threatens that, creates conflict.

Beyond high performance is the idea of meta-performance, as in transformation.

Meta-performance isn’t about being the best, but exploring the question “What am I truly capable of?”

For the meta-performer they’ve never arrived. There is always more to discover and more to grow.

Instead of being the best, which is finite, meta-performers explore their capabilities, which is infinite. This shift is tremendous.

:star: Feedback: Meta-performers embrace receive feedback as a way to unlock potential.

:star: Alive: Meta-performers are not overwhelmed and bored, but give their best energies to creating something new that aligns with their vision.

:star: Collaborative: When working with struggling teammates, meta-performers help them explore their blind spots.

:star: Celebrative: Meta-performers are not jealous, but celebrate everyone for progress towards their own impossible goals.

If you're up for the meta-performance journey, here's a question to consider:

What is an impossible goal you’re pursuing that is worth the pain of transformation and reinvention?

You might feel like 2024 is not the year you dreamed of.

I know how you feel. I used to work as a Communications SME at NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratories, but my time ended with them a few months ago because of budget cuts. Further layoffs impacted another 530 other employees last week.

It can be difficult to understand the reason behind some events in life.

❓Why did my plans fail?

❓Why did I have to go through this?

You may experience sadness and anger.

It’s important to acknowledge and express your emotions.

But what if you could also ask yourself a different question that could empower you for the future?

Many people ask questions from the perspective of “how is life is happening to me?”.

That is why we get stuck in the “why” questions.

I invite you to ask yourself: “How is life happening for me?”

This does not mean that you ignore or deny tragedy, the unexplainable, and hardship.

It means that you challenge the negativity bias.

According to positive psychology, we tend to focus more on the bad things that happen to us, which can lead to more stress, anxiety, self-doubt, and even depression.

“How is life happening to me” is a belief.

And it is a belief that can limit you.

So instead, we can choose to believe that life is actually happening FOR me.

That does not mean that life is always giving you what you want, but what you need for your highest potential.

So… what do you think? How is life happening for you?

I’d love to know. Share in the comments.

Success got you to where you are today... but if you want to go further, it's now your limitation.

Marshall Goldsmith is known for his famous quote " What got you here won't get you there."

One key reason is that the older we get, and the more successful we become, the more certain we are.

💥 We have a sense of what is tried and true.
💥 We've established best practices.
💥 We have an internal system and formula that works for us.
💥 We know what it takes and what's needed to get the job done.

And thus, we've created a ceiling for ourselves through certainty.

If you want to go further, beyond the success you've experienced so far, you need to ask a different question.

Instead of "How can I do it here the way I've done it before" the new question needs to become "What would it look like to discover what's possible?"

Certainty becomes curiosity.

Curiosity looks at "success" from many different angles. It's an open-handed posture, most likely redefining our outcomes of success.

Curiosity invites many solutions. It's no longer best practices, but simply effective practices until new ones are discovered.

Curiosity also taps a team of people differently. Your team becomes solutions-oriented instead of task-oriented.

I invite you today to consider what you're certain of. You're most likely limiting yourself and those you lead.

I wonder what truly could be possible?

The shift from certainty to curiosity will open up doors you never knew existed.

One of the questions I love to ask is "How do you get in your own way?"

Everyone has tendencies. Tendencies are the internal thoughts and leanings that move us to take certain actions.

For example, I have a tendency to rush things. It's because my internal world is saying "Let's move this forward."

In some instances, it can create powerful decisive leadership and clarity.

Other times, my tendencies may lead me to make an impulsive purchase.

That creates consequences. I might have buyer's remorse. My wife might get upset with me. The product might truly stink.

Finally, the sum of my consequences form a reality that I currently experience (and may feel stuck in).

The good news is.... you and I don't have to stay stuck.

We can do the hard work of "radical ownership."

Radical ownership doesn't ignore external factors, but shines a light on how we specifically create this reality.

When we step into radical ownership, blame stops, and empowerment begins.

This deep work is difficult to do on ourselves, though not impossible.

Noticing how we create our realities can help us course-correct by noticing our tendencies and choosing different actions.

This is some of the work I have the privledge of stepping into as an Executive Coach.

Executive Coaching can unlock your limitations and get you to higher levels because of how you (and I) get in your own way.

This impacts both professional and personal goals.

How would you like to take radical ownership today?

What would it look like to get out of your own way?
