I started working at age 14. I’m not entirely sure it was legal.
I was a paperboy in the Bay Area and my “boss” would pick my friends and me up after school and drive us half an hour somewhere to go door-to-door selling newspaper subscriptions.
I made $7. Not $7 per hour, but $7 per subscription sold.
Most days, I spent 2 hours to sell one subscription.
That’s $3.50 per hour.
Here’s a fun math hack. A quick hand to calculate annual salary using hourly rate is to double the hourly rate and add a “k” to it.
If you make $15 per hour, double it, and you get $30. Now add a ‘“k”. That’s $30k per year.
What’s the annual salary of $1,000 per hour? Double it and add a “k”, or to make it easier in this case, add three zeroes. The final product is $2M per year.
How do you make $1,000 per hour?
By staying in your lane…
Start by assigning a certain value to various types of tasks.
There are tasks for any business that you can pay someone $10-$30 per hour to complete. An EA, VA, or AI might come to mind for these.
Then, there are tasks that are worth $100 per hour.
Most of the work you and I do could fall into this category. Regardless of industry, we’re practitioners, and a $100 per hour task is something we’re skilled at, creating great value for the business.
Most people won’t get to $1000 per hour tasks because they get stuck in the $10 - $100 per hour tasks.
What’s a $1,000 per hour task?
These are business tasks that can help increase revenue by 10x.
For example, a small business owner’s $1,000 per hour task might be forming strategic partnerships, creating a new product or service, or increasing sales for her company.
Employees who do similar $100 per hour tasks might service smaller clients, while her $1000 per hour tasks would be spent on larger contracts exclusively.
Or perhaps her employees could fulfill all the contracts while she solely focuses on business development.
There can be many types of $1000 per hour task depending on your role, company, skillset, and industry. The key is to differentiate $10, $100, and $1000 per hour tasks.
