April is Autism Awareness and Acceptance Month—but this year, it brought more heartbreak than progress.
Seventeen-year-old Victor Perez, a nonverbal autistic teen with cerebral palsy, was shot nine times by police in Idaho. Days later, 9-year-old Kendrix Brehmer drowned after wandering from school in Nebraska. And they weren’t alone.
These aren’t isolated tragedies—they’re part of a systemic failure.
We can’t keep saying we “accept” autistic individuals while failing to protect them.
In my latest blog, I explore what really needs to change—from law enforcement training to community safety systems. Awareness isn’t enough. Action is overdue.
