Geography shifts change you.

Mediterranean heat can feel like expansion because your system isn’t spending the day bracing: light is steadier, the body stays closer to thermal comfort, and your rhythms have less friction. Mountains can feel like refuge because containment + quieter sensory input reduces “scan mode,” and attention finally has somewhere to land. Coastlines can feel like clarity because reflected brightness, moving air, and long horizons loosen that compressed, indoor feeling. Cold climates often do the opposite: they nudge you toward conservation- more inward focus, more vigilance, more sensitivity to light and season.

This is physiology doing what physiology does: adapting to inputs.

Three principles every integrative practitioner understands when it comes to supporting patients:

• Locus of Control (Rotter): Lasting change occurs when responsibility shifts internally. Until the patient owns the inputs & rebuilds their terrain - may that be light, stress, movement, recovery - no intervention holds.

• State-Dependent Behavior (Neuroscience): You don’t change behavior by instruction alone. You change it by altering the physiological state that governs decision-making.

• Environment as Intervention (Behavioral Psychology):
Design beats discipline. The system you place someone in determines the behavior they sustain.

Or, as Viktor Frankl put it: “Between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space is our power to choose.”

Integrative care works when we stop chasing symptoms and start rebuilding agency into our patients…

We often look to red light for quick hormonal changes, yet its true value starts much deeper; in how your cells make energy. It’s more accurate to see it as a primer - a way of giving your cells the metabolic stability they need before they meet the sun.

Red light improves mitochondrial efficiency, which is upstream of everything: energy, mood, metabolism, and hormonal rhythm. When cells can produce ATP cleanly, hormone systems shift from compensating to regulating.

Used before morning sunlight, red light acts as a physiological warm-up. It stabilizes the cortisol awakening response, increases the brain’s sensitivity to natural light cues, and helps the body interpret sunlight with more precision. You’re not replacing the sun; you’re preparing for it.

For hormones, this matters a lot. Red light supports thyroid conversion, steadies cortisol, improves ovarian and testicular ATP availability, and strengthens the serotonin–melatonin cycle. These aren’t “biohacks”—they’re basic photobiology.
