By now, you might have picked up on the fact that the ADVOdudes love . Like, A LOT. But regardless of our affinity for this aspect of leadership, we know too much transparency could yield some mishaps. Legal issues, lack of mutual comfort, and other professional boundaries might cause your leadership to become more ‘opaque,’ and that’s totally fine! Always be aware of what unavoidable hindrances your transparency may cause; Keep them in mind as you act as a .
Another way to ensure you strike that balance is to express to your team members. Frequently, leaders are expected to maintain an impenetrable wall between themselves and their team, resulting in a dysfunctional and one-sided dynamic. We recommend airing a bit more on the ‘too open’ side. Not only would this grant you more trust, but your team will likely become comfortable sharing their vulnerabilities with you!

Working in the medical field is not for the weak. One of our awesome communication coaching clients and healthcare executive, Susie, can certainly attest to this.

Before working with us, Susie opted to hide her emotions and any “weaknesses” to embody a stern, strong “executive” persona in the workplace. But, when she was tasked with speaking to the hospital’s stakeholders about the development of new children’s cancer treatment wing, we saw an opportunity to help her reframe “weakness” as . And to use that vulnerability for something powerful.

Susie told us about a particular day that completely changed her perspective. When entering the old cancer wing’s lobby, she saw a family crowded around a tiny table, eating McDonald’s on the ground, as their child was fighting through chemotherapy down the hall. Susie knew they deserved more, which pushed her to ensure the new wing had a full kitchen and seating area where families can gather comfortably as their child deals with something enormous.

Although she was hesitant, Susie included this story in her presentation… which earned her a standing ovation! Susie confessed she had never received a response like that before. It was . She’s proof positive that sharing vulnerability in the workplace can lead to powerful opportunities to deeply with others. At the end of the day, we’re all humans, after all!

If only there were a way to build a team that's productive, full of trust, and invested in helping your organization flourish... Oh, wait, there is! It's called cultivating a successful company culture, and the know just how to do it.

TIP 1: Form a shared COMMON LANGUAGE with your team. This means engaging in value-based behaviors that your team can mirror. Venture beyond sticking your values on a wall and lead by example!

TIP 2: Identify BEHAVIORS your team can BUILD HABITS AROUND. Defining tangible actions for your team to model (starting with onboarding!) will help everyone work together like an office-version of a synchronized swimming team. 🏊‍♀️

TIP 3: Practice UNCONSCIOUS COMPETENCE. Through the repetition of healthy values-based behaviors on a daily basis, you can demonstrate for your team how to act swiftly, confidently, and effectively!
