We were honored to attend the 55th LABC Awards and accept the Architectural Award in the Renovated Buildings category for our work on The Japanese Institute of Sawtelle.
Reinvesting in culturally significant buildings, especially those with humble origins, is vital not only to preserving Los Angeles’ existing building stock but also to sustaining the cultural legacies of the diverse communities that have shaped the city.

Congratulations to our project partners, Studio SUPERNATURAL and NOUS Engineering, as well as all the nominees and winners!

Interior view of Stack & Step. A research project that looks to evolve the traditional single-family catalog home for medium-density infill housing. Unlike earlier catalog models, which offered fixed floor plans, Stack & Step catalogs a set of pre-defined core elements; each containing a core domestic function. These programmatic blocks can be configured in size, quantity and arrangement making them adaptable to various site conditions, and more significantly evolving models of homeownership.

Stack & Step explores how infill housing can support evolving ownership and development models. From compact studios to larger multi-bedroom layouts, units may function as independent homes or as a series of spaces be interconnected across courtyards to accommodate families, friends, or multi-generational households. By balancing shared and private spaces, the approach is intended to enable a Threshold/Pre-Sale Model of development to reduce development risk and transfer of that risk to buyers, or as a speculative housing model.

Generous overhangs provide shade and create private patios for living area which face the adjacent creek bed; and operable doors at both ends of the living room allow the space to be enjoyed as an indoor and outdoor area. The primary living spaces are elevated above grade, set above the watershed plain of the adjacent creek bed and a spiral stair leads to a rooftop perch, ideal for stargazing in the canyon.

Traditional housing models prioritize articulation of street-facing façades, Stack & Step re-prioritizes attention to the side yards, where impacts on neighbors are greatest. Open spaces and patios are layered strategically to reduce shadows, improve daylight and ventilation, and enhance livability and the quality of ‘shared’ space with adjacent neighbors. Stack & Step was developed around a system of repetitive programmatic blocks, each containing a primary domestic function. Blocks can be bundled for combined uses or separated, based on unit type. Their repetitive nature could support panelized, pre-fab, volumetric, standard stick-frame, or hybrid construction, leveraging the strengths of each method, as appropriate, without being limited to any one system.
