A Zen master once saw that his pupil had become quite advanced in meditation. He asked his pupil, "I see that you are very adept at meditation, please tell me, how do you meditate?" The pupil began giving a detailed account of how he meditated, the various postures he assumed, the breath control techniques he used to achieve his state, the mantras he repeated, and so on. The Zen master listened attentively to to whole account, and only once the pupil had finished giving his answer did the master speak. "Good," the master said, "don't do any of that ever again."
