COAS Establishes Airborne School to Strengthen Special Operations Capability

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has charged the newly established Nigerian Army Airborne School to develop highly skilled, agile and mission-ready personnel capable of conducting complex airborne and special operations in response to evolving security threats.

The COAS gave the charge on Friday, 25 September 2026, while unveiling the Nigerian Army Airborne School at Jaji Military Cantonment, Kaduna State.

In a statement, the Acting Director Army Public Relations, Colonel Appolonia Anele, said Lieutenant General Shaibu described the establishment of the School as a strategic investment in capability development, designed to strengthen the Nigerian Army’s capacity to rapidly deploy specialised forces for demanding operations.

He noted that the changing character of warfare and increasing sophistication of asymmetric threats require highly trained and adaptable personnel capable of operating effectively across diverse and challenging environments.

The COAS stressed that airborne and special operations capabilities remain critical to modern military operations, particularly in counter-terrorism, counter-insurgency and other asymmetric security environments.

He therefore tasked the Commandant and instructors of the School to develop and continually refine a rigorous and operationally relevant training curriculum that reflects global best practices while addressing Nigeria’s peculiar and evolving security challenges.

Lieutenant General Shaibu further stated that the School would serve as a centre of excellence for airborne operations, parachuting, air assault and other specialised military skills. He explained that the institution would enhance combat readiness, operational flexibility and the Nigerian Army’s capacity to rapidly project appropriately trained forces in support of joint and multi-agency operations.

The COAS assured the School of the continued support of Army Headquarters through the provision of requisite infrastructure, equipment and manpower to enable it effectively discharge its mandate.

He added that the initiative aligns with ongoing efforts to build a more professional, adaptable, combat-ready and resilient Nigerian Army capable of effectively discharging its constitutional responsibilities.

Earlier, the Commandant of the Nigerian Army Airborne School, Brigadier General Muhammed Sani Usman, explained that the institution was upgraded from a Wing of the Nigerian Army School of Infantry, Jaji, to a full-fledged School.

He stated that the expansion was necessitated by the Nigerian Army’s ongoing force development efforts and the need to strengthen specialised capabilities, particularly those required to complement the operational employment of Nigerian Army Aviation.

The establishment of the Nigerian Army Airborne School marks another step in the Nigerian Army’s efforts to deepen specialised training and enhance the readiness of personnel for complex and rapidly evolving operational environments.

SAFER HIGHWAY PATROL ARRESTS MILITARY PERSONNEL, RECOVERS 248 MOLDS OF SUSPECTED CANNABIS IN BAYELSA

Personnel of the Safer Highway Patrol have arrested a military personnel and a civilian driver following the interception of a Toyota Hilux vehicle allegedly conveying a large quantity of suspected cannabis along the East/West Road in Bayelsa State.

The incident occurred at about 0400hrs on 6 September 2026, when Safer Highway personnel conducting intensive patrol along the East/West Road flagged down a blue Toyota Hilux with registration number RSH 986 DN.

According to the report, the vehicle was fitted with a siren, which was allegedly being used to intimidate motorists and checkpoints along the highway.

The vehicle was reportedly driven by 51-year-old Felix Dickson, a native of Owhe Community in Isoko North Local Government Area of Delta State.

Preliminary investigations revealed that Dickson had allegedly been contracted by one Lieutenant James Emmanuel, a 30-year-old Nigerian Navy personnel serving at the Nigerian Navy Ship (NSS) Ogun, to convey five Ghana-Must-Go bags from Lagos to Port Harcourt.

The bags were reportedly found to contain 248 moulds of a substance suspected to be cannabis, described in the report as “Scottish Loud”, allegedly intended for distribution to users in Port Harcourt.

During interrogation, the driver reportedly claimed ownership of the recovered exhibits.

The suspects, vehicle and recovered items have subsequently been handed over to the Commander, Vehicle and Crime Response Unit (VCRU), for discreet investigation and further necessary action.

The authorities are expected to establish the circumstances surrounding the movement of the suspected illicit substance, the alleged use of the vehicle's siren and the involvement of the military personnel in the matter.

The arrest underscores the importance of sustained highway patrols and inter-agency cooperation in tackling the movement of illicit substances and other criminal activities along major highways.

A suspected Boko Haram su***de vehicle attack on an Army base has been foiled after gallant Nigerian Army soldiers neutralized the attacker before he could detonate the explosives concealed inside the vehicle.

The attacker reportedly drove the explosives-laden vehicle towards the military base in an apparent attempt to breach the location and inflict mass casualties among troops.

However, the soldiers responded swiftly and decisively, stopping the vehicle and neutralizing the attacker before the explosives could be detonated.

A subsequent inspection of the vehicle revealed a significant quantity of explosive materials concealed inside, highlighting the potentially devastating consequences that could have followed had the attacker succeeded in reaching his intended target.

The incident once again underscores the persistent threat posed by Boko Haram terrorists and the dangers faced by troops deployed in counter-insurgency operations.

The quick reaction of the soldiers prevented what could have been a major tragedy and demonstrated the importance of vigilance, courage and operational readiness in confronting terrorist threats.

The successful foiling of the attack is also a reminder of the sacrifices made by Nigerian troops who continue to risk their lives to protect military installations, communities and the nation against terrorist and other criminal elements.

How to apply for Nigerian Air Force 2026 recruitment

The Nigerian Air Force has commenced its 2026 recruitment exercise for eligible Nigerians seeking enlistment as tradesmen/women and non-tradesmen/women.

The recruitment is for the Basic Military Training Course 47/2026, with online registration opening on Thursday, September 3, 2026, and closing on October 14, 2026. The application is free of charge.

The NAF advised prospective applicants to carefully study the eligibility requirements and application guidelines before submitting their forms.

How to apply
Interested applicants are required to apply online through the official NAF recruitment portal. (https://nafrecruitment.airforce.mil.ng)

Applicants should:
1. Visit the NAF recruitment portal and select the BMTC 47/2026 recruitment exercise.

2. Read the recruitment guidelines and confirm that they meet the eligibility requirements.

3. Complete the online application form with the required personal, educational and other information.

4. Submit the application after checking that the information provided is accurate.

5. Upon successful completion, print the acknowledgement form, Parent/Guardian Consent Form and Local Government Area Attestation Form.

6. Ensure the LGA Attestation Form is signed by an authorised official. This may be a military officer from the applicant’s state, a police officer of the rank of Chief Superintendent or above, a substantive LGA chairman/secretary, or a magistrate, subject to the conditions stated by the NAF.

7. Applicants who fail to successfully complete their online applications will not be able to generate the required forms.

Who can apply?
Applicants must be Nigerian citizens by birth and must be medically, physically and psychologically fit and meet the NAF’s medical and employment standards.

They must also meet the minimum height requirement of 1.66m for males and 1.63m for females.

Tradesmen/women
Applicants seeking enlistment as tradesmen/women must be 18 to 27 years old by March 1, 2027.

Applicants seeking recruitment as sportsmen/women are expected to provide evidence of professional sporting experience, including relevant certificates and medals.

Non-tradesmen/women
Non-tradesmen/women applicants must be 18 to 22 years old by March 1, 2027.

They must possess at least five credits, including Mathematics and English, in not more than two sittings in WAEC, NECO, GCE, NABTEB or NBAIS.

They are also required to possess Primary School Certificates and Secondary School Testimonials.

What happens after application?
The NAF said a Zonal General Aptitude Test will be conducted for successful applicants, with the date to be communicated through the recruitment portal.

Only successful applicants will subsequently be invited for the selection interview.

The Force also warned applicants to note that the recruitment exercise is free of charge and advised them to avoid anyone demanding payment in connection with the process.

The recruitment portal will remain open until October 14, 2026, after which applications will close.
