We spend so much time planning for school, our careers, and our families, but how often do we think about how we want to live—and die—in the second half of our lives? AARP Chief Public Policy Officer Debra Whitman’s book, The Second Fifty, tackles the big, sometimes uncomfortable questions: How will I live as I age? Where will I live? And yes, how will I die?

Deb and Riveter founder Amy Nelson recently sat down with trailblazers like Katrina Spade, founder and CEO of Recompose, to explore these questions. Katrina’s company offers human composting as an eco-friendly alternative to traditional burial and cremation. By using plant materials and natural microbes, Recompose transforms human remains into nutrient-rich soil that can be used to nurture gardens, plant trees, or support conservation efforts. This innovative approach offers a meaningful way to reconnect with the earth and leave a positive environmental legacy.

One takeaway? Discussing how we want to die isn’t morbid—it’s empowering. As Katrina puts it, "Mentioning human composting can open up the conversation."

Whether it’s planning for hospice care, exploring eco-friendly options like human composting, or simply making your wishes known, these conversations give clarity to loved ones and peace of mind to us.

It’s time to rethink what it means to plan for the future, not just in terms of living, but also in how we’ll leave a meaningful legacy.
