Undocumented immigrants paid nearly $97 billion in U.S. taxes in 2022. That’s $8,889 per person — including billions in Social Security, Medicare, and unemployment taxes for programs many can’t even access. In 40 states, undocumented immigrants pay a higher effective tax rate than the top 1%.

Honoring Mario Joseph’s Legacy

We are deeply saddened by the passing of Mario Joseph, a courageous and inspirational champion for human rights in Haiti. As lead attorney with the Bureau des Avocats Internationaux (BAI), Mario dedicated his life to elevating the voices of vulnerable Haitians—from displaced communities to survivors of sexual violence and political persecution.

Mario’s relentless advocacy shaped landmark initiatives: launching impactful video campaigns, advancing expert witness testimony in support of justice efforts, and uplifting women’s leadership across Haiti. His pursuit of accountability led to a historic legal victory holding the United Nations responsible for introducing cholera to Haiti.

Beyond the courtroom, Mario’s vision extended to powerful projects like Ja Nou We L, a community-driven platform documenting human rights abuses and mobilizing public accountability.

At Variant Strategies, we are proud to have worked in partnership with IJDH and BAI, amplifying Haitian-led justice movements that were deeply influenced by Mario’s leadership. His commitment to equity, truth, and dignity inspired much of our own work.

As we mourn this immense loss, we stand in solidarity with Mario’s colleagues at BAI/IJDH, who continue the fight for justice amid Haiti’s growing instability. As one team member shared:

“We are not called to fight on in spite of the dangerous conditions in Haiti—we are called to fight on because of them.”
In his honor, the Institute for Justice & Democracy in Haiti has launched the Mario Joseph’s Legacy Campaign. We invite you to contribute in memory of Mario and to help sustain the work he so passionately championed.
