Today, I recorded a short “Civic Minute” to reflect on the legacy of tradespeople in Los Angeles. I visited the historic furniture and decorative arts district near L.A. Trade Tech and the Reef, a cornerstone of the city’s design culture and entrepreneurial spirit. From there, I made my way down Main Street to visit my grandfather, who’s has run his upholstery business for nearly 50 years. He was surprised to see me filming, but I took a moment to honor him and thank him for his decades of craftsmanship and dedication. In a city known for innovation and art, it’s tradesmen like him who laid the foundation, stitch by stitch, for the vibrant creative community we see today.

The details of Frederick Douglass’ life were so remarkable! He was truly a man of some exquisitely rich tastes! I know that it’s hard to imagine that sort of mind frame coming out of the tragedies of slavery in the United States. However, he did it! When you go into the home and National Park of Douglass you will find yourself in amazement and wonder realizing, learning how he also helped so many others escape and fight to freedom. Harriet Tubman was a close friend of his whom he would let stay at his home, he rented out property, Douglass was even an inventor! Take a look, scroll through and see, take a lucky guess and see which of these pieces of furniture one of the most illustrious freedom fighters, Frederick Douglass invented and shaped for the future! It was a great experience, wonderful actually learning about "Ad-King" Byron Lewis at the National Museum of American History because Lewis is a giant and is still around at 93 and his empire is still going! UniWorld Group impacted countless lives - Lewis created an industry that was competitive within a highly impacted market. Somehow he managed to help just about every major company that you can think of, from Disney, to Three Musketeers, and the list goes on! We at appreciate and honor this display and historic moment! This is a antique French provincial desk and chair on display. This chair, along with the desk, belonged to Byron Lewis and was used in his office where he built his groundbreaking advertising agency, UniWorld Group. It is symbolic because Lewis did indeed impact countless lives and also established a global atmosphere and standard of media entertainment. The donation includes not only the furniture but also objects related to the history of UniWorld and Lewis' personal story, including awards, campaigns, and artwork. Lewis’ overall impact and legacy were significant to say the least. Much gratitude to the Smithsonian Institution.

Furniture was and still is big business throughout the world, Americans ought to know that a significant portion of our nation and economy was made with this in mind - in all of its creativity.
