First Black Woman to Earn a Ph.D. in Computer Science at Purdue✊🏿 Amber Johnson was hooded by Dr. Raquel Hill, the first Black woman to earn a computer science Ph.D. from Harvard, at her graduation. Dr. Hill has been Johnson's mentor for the past two years. She received her doctorate's degree in 2002.
Johnson said walking across the stage was a unique experience: “When I walked on stage I kinda felt like I was standing in the shoes of Dr. Raquel Hill, and I felt like there were these thousands of shoes standing in front of me that I was walking in.”
