The theme of International Women's Day 2023 is "embrace equity." This powerful message is aimed at getting the word out about true inclusion and belonging fueled by equitable action. What does that look like? Women around the world given the same resources and opportunities and targeting these resources to the needs of women across the globe. Let's embrace each other and equity!

Belated content dump from a recent speaking gig in Washington D.C. at the National Association of Social Workers national conference. The topic: key messaging and effective storytelling through intentional language. The audience: an amazing live (and virtual) engaged group of social work professionals from the U.S. and around the globe. Had a little time to see a few sights, but can’t wait to return!

I don’t have to tell you that the world is a heavy place right now. Pile on the stresses of your average workday as a communications professional, organizational leader or business owner and you have a recipe for burnout. The last few years there have been a lot of articles, videos, posts, etc... about how to avoid burnout through meditation, exercising, sleeping enough, and eating right.

That’s all great, but let’s talk about tips that are directly work-related and specific to what you do every day. Today on the "Comms Chat" blog I explore three tips that have helped me. What has helped you?

The last couple of weeks have been a whirlwind of conference speaking - first St Louis, then Washington D.C. - about effective and strategic communications. Love the groups I get to speak with, like this group of public affairs and government communicators in PRSA. They are always eager to learn, engaging and ask the best questions. I’m sure they had me cracking up here!

Yes! We live in a story-based world and the time is right to start telling your story. If you don't, you can be sure someone else will. So excited to present on strategic messaging to a live and virtual, national (and global!) audience, at the National Association of Social Workers Conference next week in DC. Looking forward to hearing their stories!

And just like that … it’s over! Had so much fun presenting at the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) Public Affairs and Government Summit. Storytelling, especially for public agencies, is important now more than ever. Solid key messaging helps with that. Met a lot of amazing communicators from government, non-profits, military and public affairs. On to the next gig!

Ready to meet all these amazing professional communicators and lead a session on messaging! Let’s go! 🎤💥

Who doesn't love winning? But what about losing? I’m not saying you should love losing, but it does have value. Something I always tell my clients: Failure is an opportunity to learn. Specifically, how can you harness what you learned from your failure to create something great? When a comms plan, crisis response or statement goes awry, it’s time to acknowledge it, go back, re-tool and try to improve for next time. Over time, these improvements build on each other to create a strong leader and organization.
Here’s what failure has taught me:
• Preparation is necessary
• Tenacity is admirable
• Resilience is learned
• Listening is everything

What has failure taught you?
