Some of the worst advice you've been given is to “go with your gut” when hiring.

Unfortunately, our guts can be riddled with bias.

There's lots of reasons why. But as just one example, we tend to like people more if they are similar to us. So we unconsciously go easier on people in interviews if they have shared interests, or if we like them more.

The downside is that making hiring decisions based on you like more means you miss out on a huge pool of really qualified talent - talent who thinks and acts differently than you do. It result in hiring "culture clones" instead of "culture adds."

And we don't want that, because diversity makes our businesses stronger.
