For the final session of the Youth Leadership Airport Academy, students turned their passion for flight into a plan for the future.

After exploring operations, mechanics, and sustainability, this week focused on postsecondary aviation pathways — trade schools, community college, and four-year universities. Students met an expert college-and-career panel, created LinkedIn profiles, and took professional headshots to carry it all forward.

Last week, we had the opportunity to join our partners at Alliance College-Ready Public Schools as they presented “From Policy to Practice: Embedding No Place for Hate into Community Schools for Belonging & Safety” at the National Community Schools and Family Engagement Conference.

The session highlighted Alliance’s journey to integrate the No Place for Hate framework into its broader Community Schools strategy, not as a stand-alone initiative but as part of a larger commitment to fostering belonging, student wellness, safety, and meaningful engagement across its school communities. What stood out most was the honest conversation around implementation: the lessons learned, the challenges navigated, and the importance of centering student voice, restorative practices, and strong partnerships in the work.

We are grateful to have supported this effort and proud to see Alliance share its experience with practitioners from across the country. Opportunities like these remind us that lasting change happens when schools move beyond programs and focus on building systems that create the conditions for every student to thrive.

Summer is almost here, but we’re still celebrating the launch of our second annual Youth Leadership Airport Academy! ☀️✈️

Session 1 kicked off by introducing high school students to the behind-the-scenes of airport operations. They explored everything from daily logistics to leadership strategies, learning exactly what makes Van Nuys Airport a premier global hub. Councilmember Imelda Padilla and LAWA Commissioner Victor Narro welcomed students by speaking on the vital role Van Nuys Airport plays in the community. Students focused on what it means to be a leader, as well as how they can take their skills and apply them to the vast field of aviation. Thank you to the Youth Development Department, Councilmember Imelda Padilla, Commissioner Narro, and Van Nuys Airport for continuing to inspire and uplift future leaders.

This Spring, step into leadership and explore the world of aviation through the Youth Leadership Airport Academy (YLAA) at Van Nuys Airport.

YLAA is designed to empower future airport & aviation leaders by providing:
