The spirit of connection, unity and love is what matters most.

There’s a lot of judgment in the scene about what counts as “rave” or “underground.” The right sound, the right room, the right look, the artist behaving a certain way.

Noro of EARLY BIRDZ frames it perfectly... at the end of the day it’s all packaging and the question we really need to be asking is if the spirit of connection, unity, and love is there?

You could have all these different expressions and maybe miss that piece, which is actually the piece.

One family, one culture.
Dark, light, underground, commercial, if someone receives the piece they need, does the label really matter?

There is a fine line between art and product that many artists find challenging to navigate.

You want to have a successful career and you don’t want to “sell out.” Is there a way forward where you can be both successful in the market and still true to who you are?

Noro Kocharyan ( Noro ) spent more than a decade in brand marketing with big names like Red Bull and Absolut before he built EARLY BIRDZ , an LA-based all ages morning coffee rave that’s grown into a thriving movement and community in just two short years.

His take is the ability to detach yourself from your art (and your ego) can help you see your art as a product without losing the joy of creating or what makes you, you. 🦉

I encourage you to sit with this episode and try on some new ideas which Noro lays out and challenge your thinking around art vs. product, underground vs. commercial and see what you discover to be true for you. Because that’s all that matters in the end.

Do you consider yourself an underground artist?

I’m curious how you define it for yourself and/or how others define it for you.

I’ve been thinking a lot about what it means to be “underground” and the ways in which any label can either limit us or helpfully guide us. And where the boundaries are when we cross into the commercial realm.

Can the essence of the underground extend beyond our definition of it?

No right or wrong answers. It’s a discussion for curious minds.

You can have a million followers and not be able to sell a thousand tickets.

Areen Kojikian ( Areen Kojikian ) , is the talent buyer for High Vibe Fest and manages artists via her company Northstar Management, which means she’s on both sides of the pitch.

The metric she actually cares about is market history. Tickets sold under your name, in a real market, where people came for you and nobody else. Everything else is a number that looks good and often does nothing when someone’s deciding whether to book you.

Forget the obsession with follower counts and start focusing on your hard ticket data!

Is genre up to you?

Evan Hatfield plays sitar and makes techno. When people ask what to call it, he tells them that’s their choice. His job, as he says, “is to create as authentically as possible.”

Every manager, A&R, booking agent, sync licenser, and talent buyer is saying the same thing.

You must have a clear identity, vision, and story to work with. This is what puts you on the radar as someone they can help and want to support.

They are not there to drag you along... in fact it’s the opposite. Generating momentum yourself FIRST is key and that means putting in the reps.

I can tell you from firsthand experience when their is a lack of clarity from the artist it is almost impossible to market anything.

I think it’s worth considering that this is actually the fun part. The world building, the refining and clarifying what you stand for as an artist and what meaning your music has.

It means staying in constant conversation with yourself and learning to trust what feels right for you.

Thank you for bringing the community together and creating these opportunities to learn from each other.
