To create healthier buildings, we strive to eliminate unhealthy materials, such as vinyl, from the built environment. This course will provide an understanding of the impact vinyl can have on human health through a brief overview of vinyl’s chemical make-up and manufacturing process. The course will primarily focus on alternate healthy materials to avoid regrettable substitutions. Designers will understand the pros and cons of each material substitute and learn how to engage with stakeholders to abstain in the selection of vinyl products.

Moderator

Kathleen Hetrick, Sustainability Engineer
Kathleen Hetrick is a sustainability engineer at Buro Happold and a LEED AP BD+C and EcoDistricts AP. As part of Buro Happold’s sustainability and physics team, Kathleen combines her passion for human-focused sustainable design with a technical background in mechanical engineering. She has experience in a wide range of cutting-edge projects across all scales of work including multiple LEED platinum projects, Living Building Challenge projects, historical adaptive reuse, LEED Neighborhood Developments, and city and campus sustainability plans.

Speakers

Adrienne Rosca, LFA, Fitwel Ambassador
Adrienne is an Associate and Project Manager in Austin, Texas. She received her Bachelor of Architecture at Woodbury University, is a Fitwel Ambassador and LFA Accredited. With a focus on multi-family housing, Adrienne has spent the last 10 years of her career working on mixed-use, urban infill, student housing, and affordable housing. At Steinberg Hart, she is the Chair of the Material Co-Lab group, where she works alongside her colleagues to advocate for low-carbon, healthy and equitably sourced materials and led the Fitwel certification process for the Austin Office.

Alyson Kritz, NCIDQ, LFA, Fitwel, LEED Green Associate
Alyson designs inspiring and functional spaces with a unique sense of quality, care, and attention to detail. She applies evidence-based design principles to her projects which allow spaces to be planned, programmed, designed, and constructed effectively. Client needs are prioritized, and expectations exceeded as she guides projects through a creative and collaborative design process. Her background in civic, cultural, educational, and workplace design spans across the United States and varies from minor renovations to state-wide masterplans. She creatively balances color and material to reflect each project’s location, culture, and community. Her dedication to sustainability, biophilic design principles, and ethical material selection is ingrained into all projects regardless of budget, aesthetic, or timeline.

Javaria Farooq, Fitwel Ambassador
Javaria designs timeless interiors that carry a unique sense of quality, and attention to detail. She uses design as a medium to creatively reflect and preserve each project’s culture and community, unique to its location. Javaria uses a lense of sustainability, wellbeing and social ethics, to craft a thoughtful selection of materials into every project. Her commitment to healthy interiors begins from the conceptual design phase and she joins these design principles together with a sophisticated eye for color and material to transform interior spaces.

The session focuses on eliminating vinyl products in the built environment by educating designers on alternate materials and avoiding regrettable substitutions. Vinyl is a red list chemical and has negative impacts to human health and environmental health. The course will also teach designers how to engage with manufacturers, clients, and consultants so that they have the ability to filter through greenwashing and advocate for/specify non-toxic products in an educated manner.

Project Designed by: Skidmore, Owings & Merrill

From the early conceptual stages dating back to 2014, the City of Long Beach, library staff, and design team shared a vision of the new library and park as a place for the neighborhood to gather. The intent was to create a building not just to keep books, but a space alive with activity—a warehouse of knowledge and unique community center. The Billie Jean King Main Library was imagined as a pavilion within the new Lincoln Park, welcoming people inside from all parts of the city.

To make the project financially feasible, a public-private partnership (P3) was formed to allow the developer to assume construction and maintenance responsibilities of the finished buildings with the city paying rent for the first 40 years of occupancy. The framework and team structure of the P3 delivery method allowed multidisciplinary teams to form lines of open communication and identify shared project goals among themselves as well as with the City of Long Beach and library staff very early in the design process.

The team focused on creating a sustainable, now LEED Platinum Certified, timber structure that provides a light-filled, open, and warm interior environment. To achieve this vision, the glulam timber girders, joists, and plywood decking comprising the superstructure are intentionally left exposed, contributing to a captivating interior atmosphere. The building envelope, composed of unitized curtainwall system, is also designed to maximize daylight and views while mitigating glare and solar radiation.

Because the project will be maintained by the developer over the next four decades, quality and durability were the focus of many discussions over the course of five years—from design conception to completion of the library. The design-build team and client had a shared goal to maximize value and fine-tune solutions to achieve best possible outcome for the city and its community.

Please register for tomorrow's free presentation of the Housing Designs Standards for Accessibility and Inclusion and learn how you can make your sustainable projects more equitable, inclusive, and accessible.

https://www.aialosangeles.org/event/designing-housing-for-accessibility-and-inclusion/

The Housing Design Standards for Accessibility and Inclusion define a set of multifamily housing design and operations strategies. Co-created by advocates, developers, and architects, the elements support cross-disability accessibility and link disability-forward design choices to intersectional benefits around affordability, sustainability, racial equity, and safety. Development teams can use the Design Standards to plan and design their projects, then self-certify their communities on their level of access and inclusion.

Learning Objectives:
– What are The Kelsey’s Design Standards?
– How did they come to be?
– Why are Accessibility and Inclusion important to design/development?
– How can I (or my firm) engage with the standards?

Presentation by:
Erick Mikiten, AIA – The Art of Access and Mikiten Architecture
Fatimah Aure, MPP – The Kelsey

In a Discussion with:
Ismar Enriquez AIA, LFA, LEED AP – Senior Associate, Steinberg Hart
Denice Wint, LEED AP – Vice President of Real Estate Development, EAH Housing

On behalf of RMI and Emerald Cities Collaborative we would like to share "the launch of the Equitable Home Electrification Toolkit! This toolkit is intended to help communities across the United States take meaningful steps toward equitably electrifying their existing housing stock through a planning process designed to maximize engagement and co-ownership between local governments and frontline community groups.

The content was jointly developed by RMI and ECC for the 2021-2022 California Equitable Home Electrification Program, a community of practice between 10 teams representing CA local governments and community organizations. Though developed for California, the published toolkit resources are broadly applicable for communities across the country.

Please feel free to socialize this toolkit broadly to any local governments, community groups, or other organizations that could benefit from these resources."
