What you see behind the interviewee is coastal waters with laterite caused by the mining in the area. According to the interviewee, this area used to be fishing grounds, a dock for boats, a picnic area, and a swimming area for the surrounding communities. However, due to the laterite, fish is no longer abundant, the water is very murky -
making it unsafe for families to picnic and swim in the area.

Homonhon Island is located in the province of Eastern Samar and is part of the municipality of Guiuan. The island has a population of approximately 8,000 people, ALL living in coastal areas, and whose major source of livelihood are fishing and agriculture. There are currently 3 mines on the island - Mt. Sinai Mining Exploration and DevelopmentCorpoiration, Emir Minerals Corporation, and Techiron Mineral Resources Inc.
