Winning used to be about training. With today's advancements in technology, almost top athletes are doing the same training. Yet only some of them are consistent winners. Research now indicates that mindset and attitude may be responsible for up to 50% of the win. Winners think and behave differently. What are you doing to achieve that difference?

Think like an athlete!
Success requires you to move beyond your current capabilities. Champion athletes (like Michael Phelps, Gale Devers, Tiger Woods, Katie Ledecky and many others) adopt this mindset.

Therefore, worrying about the competition distracts their focus. It throws them off their game or their race.

High performing athletes compete with themselves. They constantly seek to improve their own performances and records.
You are capable of so much more than you realize. Start to look for the opportunities which give you an edge – they are all around you.
How can you apply this to your business and your daily life? Identify where you excel. Where are you giving 80%?

What would be possible if you give 85 or 90%? You’re capable of doing that.

And the results will be more than 5-10%, but rather up to 1100% - Where can you get that kind of return on your investment?

“When people make the Olympic Team, it is never a one year phenomenon. It is always a multi-year and often 4-8 year consistent effort. There is no secret to success other than hard consistent, intelligent work directed by a competent coach with a dedicated athlete. That’s it. You need both.” ~Peter Daland, US Olympic Team Coach

Fascinating, wise advice by a world renowned swimming coach. Yet, let's ask ourselves about our daily lives, and growing our businesses - from start-up and early revenue, to a multinational corporation. Overnight success is not and should not be expected. However, with serious Commitment, Discipline, and Desire, supported by a competent coach and team, you can achieve your own "gold medal". It's up to you! I know because I help people and companies achieve!

Quick thought and exercise: with the current issues surrounding COVID-19, what opportunities are being presented to you? How can you take advantage of them?

Legendary Football Coach Nick Saban said, "Average players want to be left alone. Good players want to be coached. Great players want to be told the truth."

Business Consultant Craig Valine, stated this very succinctly:
“Same thing can be said about business owners.

Occasionally, I get some feedback that I'm being too straightforward with people in regard to their businesses.

• Some business owners don't want to hear the truth about the fact that what they're doing “might” not be the most effective, efficient or profitable way to do things.

• Some business owners don't want to hear the truth about HOW they are investing their time & money.

• Some business owners don't want to hear the truth about how much more profitable their business can become once they take the blinders off and accept that there are new and better ways to grow.

On the other hand ...

There are many people who DO want to hear the straight truth about how they can improve their marketing systems so that they make more money, make a bigger impact, and do it all without sacrificing all of their free time.

These are the fantastic people I love to work with and help.

• People who are serious about making a difference...not merely "doing the thing."

• People who know that money is NOT evil and that making a whole bunch of it, simply allows you to impact more people and live the life you deserve to live.

• People who know that the very best investment they can ever make in their business... is an investment in themselves - surrounding themselves with other success-minded, ambitious, driven people. Making them the very best versions of themselves that they can be.”

If you are one of these people, you might like to talk to me.

“the secret to all victory lies in the Organization of the non-obvious”.
Marcus Aurelius

In our consulting and coaching activities, rather than react or respond, we first look to see if there are patterns in behaviors, events and activities both direct and indirect. This method often leads to a better and more realistic assessment of the issues, as well as how to address them.

In dealing with entrepreneurs and coaches, many lack the notion of leadership. This does not mean that they can't, but rather that they may not know how or are not applying themselves.

Some notes on leadership, applicable to every profession and capacity (borrowed from my swimming colleague, Dr. Monica Schloder),

An effective leader is a person who does the following:

Basic Elements of Transformational Leadership

* Idealized Influence. Transformational leaders act as role models and followers seek to emulate their behavior
* Creates an inspiring vision of the future
* Inspirational motivation
* Motivates and inspires people to engage with that vision
Intellectual stimulation
* Manages delivery of the vision
* Individualized consideration
* Coaches and builds a team so that it is more effective at achieving the vision

Seven Transformational Leadership Qualities

* A clear vision: Transformational leaders have a vision of what they want to achieve and the ability to clearly communicate this vision so that everyone in the organization/parents/athletes understands what is needed to achieve this vision. …
* Courage
* Self-motivation
* Inspiration
* Know your people
* Set a company standard
* Follow through

The impact of transformational leadership reaches every level of an organization. At the team level, you can find members that care, stimulate, inspire and motivate each other. Upper-level transformational leaders set an organization’s direction and vision, influencing the way the lower levels of an organization operate. Excellent leadership brings together the skills needed to do these things.

How can you begin to emulate these qualities? (A current example is Sean McVay, football coach of the Los Angeles Rams.)

Google can give you 100,000 answers. It has no idea what is the right question to ask. Experience, intelligence, and 10,000 "failures and problems" inform you on asking better questions. The 100,000 answers just delude you into thinking you know something.

This week, I was involved in a compensation issue (once again) about compensation (hourly rates, bonuses, etc.) and motivation. It was very difficult to explain that people are motivated best by recognition and personal achievement. Of course, the money is nice, but recognition and achievement are so much more impressionable and long lasting, if not permanent. And, lo and behold, I came across this recent results of a study in my inbox.

Top 5 motivating factors for workers [2018]

The report, called The 7 Key Trends Impacting Today's Workplace, looked at things like employee engagement, retention, and organizational culture. According to the data, these were the top 5 motivating factors for workers, employees and contractors:

1. Camaraderie and peer motivation (20%) [achievement and recognition]
2. Intrinsic desire to do a good job (17%) [achievement]
3. Feeling encouraged and recognized (13%) [recognition]
4. Having a real impact (10%) [achievement and contribution]
5. Growing professionally (8%) [achievement]

Every one of these is about achievement and recognition !! Do you think that we should invest differently when "rewarding" our employees and contractors?
