Doctor groups continue to exert pressure for Medicare telehealth reimbursement to be made permanent. Between consumer demand and physician pressure, expect telehealth to continue to pervade the healthcare landscape for years to come as technology focused care continues to evolve.

Doctor groups are pressing CMS to permanently expand telehealth flexibilities that the agency is proposing to run through 2023.

While volume and margin improved for hospitals in June, job growth stagnated. It is not immediately clear what drove the slowdown in recovery from the COVID pandemic but likely factors include physician burnout, an aging workforce, and financial constraints for hospitals after a year of care disruptions. Hospital and healthcare leaders should be proactive and begin considering the implications of a rapidly aging workforce on patient care and business operations.

Hospitals lost 5,500 jobs during the month after gaining 2,900 in May, though there were some gains in other healthcare subsectors.

Provider and payers alike are excited about the prospect of standardized electronic prior authorization for Medicare Advantage plans. This new bipartisan legislation aims to reduce administrative workloads and hopefully will alleviate some of the burnout frequently felt by healthcare professionals.

A new House bill aims to require Medicare Advantage plans to establish electronic prior authorization systems and adopt other reforms to streamline a source of major administrative burden for providers.

Some insurers have moved to end fee waivers for COVID-19 care in recent months. While vaccinations and testing are still covered as required by federal law, this may carry negative implications for those unwilling or unable to pay out of pocket for potentially critical care.

Just as other industries are rolling back some consumer-friendly changes made early in the pandemic—think empty middle seats on airplanes—so, too, are health insurers.
