They met many years ago and immediately bonded over their shared passion to create a family. When they started researching the possibilities of using a Japanese egg donor, they quickly realized that find
ing one would not be easy. Japanese egg donors, it turns out, are notoriously difficult to find. Fast forward to many years later, and their research led them back to Japan, where Kenji was born. It turns out that in Japan, it is not legal to use a third-party egg donor or surrogate. If an infertile or gay couple wishes to utilize the services of an egg donor or surrogate they need to travel to the U.S. or another IVF-friendly country to take advantage of available IVF technologies. In 2012, in an effort to help these IPs realize their dreams of creating a family, they started Jbaby, a concierge-level, white-glove service about helping IPs navigate an extremely complex medical system. Out of necessity, one year later Michael and Kenji started Jbaby, a full-service Japanese egg donation agency that is now the largest provider of Japanese egg donors in the world. Recently, they started offering surrogates to IPs who have already created embryos using Jbaby egg donors. Michael and Kenji were married in 2013. They reside in Los Angeles, California. In 2016, they welcomed their first son, Elijah Saito-Lacoe. In 2020, they welcomed their second son, Luca Saito-Lacoe, into the world. Both children were born through the selfless assistance of an egg donor and a surrogate.
