I started Shoebox in 2014 not knowing what I was doing. I just knew something was wrong with the way artists were being asked to live. Isolated. Competing. Measuring their worth by who selected them and who didn't.

So I made a room.

Over ten years that room has become something I'm genuinely proud of. A commons. A circle. A place where artists stop being alone with it.

It’s my last day posting here as part of Shoebox’s insta takeover . Ive been grappling with sharing the more woo side of my process. But times they are a’ changing’ and the art (and literary) industry’s dismissal of the mystic is, I hope, finally starting to pivot.

I was a journalist at the Financial Times in London when I had a mystical opening. I could suddenly and inexplicably read minds and souls. In the financial industry we talk about “futures” and I was seeing a whole different type of “future”.

I didn’t want it. Fought it with claws bared. I’d worked in Japan as a journalist before London and had spent a decade jet-setting around Europe and Asia.

Anything but a mystic, pleaaaase, please, please, universe.

Now in the woods in Oregon surrounded by deer, coyote, bear, hawks, eagles, with my sage and nag champa and case full of tarot decks.

My god I love the abundance of my life now. I went from black and white to technicolor.

But how do I fit now? Do I want to?

As a book coach I often work with others writing memoir and self help about sudden mystical openings, a rabbi in Texas, an accountant in Connecticut, an acupuncturist in Seattle.

And Ive watched how the mainstream publishing industry dismisses them. I’ve been doing this for 30 years and I see. I know. Things are shifting now with how dire things are getting.

Sending out the mystic vibes today, all day. 🙏🏻🩵💚❤️💙
