Studio visit with Lynn Heinz today.

Lynn's been part of the Shoebox community for a long time now. When we first started working together she was figuring out her practice, her voice, what she actually wanted to say. Now I walk into her studio and there are paintings stacked against every wall, cutout figures, assemblage boxes with tiny worlds inside them, drawings, a self-portrait that's been through twelve incarnations and is finally finding its direction. The work is so clearly hers.

She starts with found photos. Old images of girls, children, women caught in a moment. And then she manufactures a whole new story from that borrowed moment. Adds seaweed. A catfish. A bowl of Easter eggs. Red Chinese lanterns. She's a visual author rewriting other people's lives into something surreal and honest and completely her own.

Coming of age. That's the thread through all of it. Girls moving through girlhood, building identity, figuring out who they get to be. It shows up in the assemblage boxes where figures tumble and float. It shows up in the big bold paintings with those charged flat colors. It shows up in the drawings where a girl has a house for a head.

This is what mentorship looks like to me. Not me telling her what to do. Watching someone find their way to themselves and getting to be in the room for it.

Thank you Claire for stopping by, hanging out, and chatting with us. And for getting to meet Lynn upstairs while you were here. This is exactly what I mean when I say the Brewery is its own little ecosystem, you come for one thing and leave having met three more people and had a real conversation.

Adeola's show Rooted in an Ecology of Ancestry is still up at Shoebox Projects, and the closing is coming. Sunday, September 13, 3 to 5pm, with an artist talk and performance. She made the call early on to save her talk and performance for the closing instead of splitting her energy across two events, and honestly, that kind of self awareness is its own lesson. Sometimes less really is more.

Come see the work before it comes down. Come hear her talk through the lineage, the cyanotypes, the roots. This is the last chance.

If you don’t push the limits you won’t know what it could have looked like.

Bad work is not wasted work. Bad work is the thing that teaches you what you couldn’t have learned by playing it safe. The painting that doesn’t work tells you more about your practice than ten paintings that do exactly what you expected them to do.

Make the bad painting. Make a lot of them. That’s how you find the good ones.

I cannot make your career for you. Nobody can. What mentors, galleries, and curators can do is open doors, make introductions, offer feedback, and show you the map. But you have to walk the road yourself.
