Advice to young promoters: PLEASE DO NOT BITE OFF MORE THAN YOU CAN CHEW.

This includes refraining from booking shows when you don't have the money to pay for them.

This also means being upfront with your local openers and community when you f**k up and admit your wrongs rather than trying to make it sound like it was on the Artist/Band. That's a bitch move.

IF YOU CAN'T PAY FOR A SHOW, YOU THE PROMOTER CANCELED. NOT THE ARTIST. Just be honest with your people and tell them you f**ked up and cancelled because you couldn't perform your obligations. Acting like it was outside of your control shows your true colors....just own up to it. I saw a guy in Vegas do this recently when he failed to pay an artist -- it was so damn refreshing. It almost made me want to work with the guy, despite knowing that he just f**ked up that bad with another artist.

It's rather simple, really. Just don't book a show that you can only pay for if your other 5 shows are successful. That's amateur s**t and it makes you look like one.

Bottom Line: Only make commitments you can nonetheless follow through on even if every other hustle you have at the moment doesn't pan out. That's your problem, not the artist's. You need to have the deposit earmarked and set aside for the artist. Otherwise, you're a dead beat and your reputation as such will spread quickly.

I've never been good at biting my tongue and I am not the only one. Most managers/agents/attorneys aren't the type to do so either. It's a small world and everything comes back around.
