🧬 Ready to take your biotechnology lessons to the next level? 🔬
Explore ABE’s advanced high school biotechnology unit: “Modifying HIC to Affinity Chromatography by Adding HA Tag to pARA-R.”
Developed by ABE Greater Los Angeles Master Teacher Fellow Dan Baker, this 6-session lab-based unit gives advanced students the opportunity to explore how biotechnology is used in commercial protein purification. Students work through bioinformatics, primer design, and molecular biology techniques to engineer a plasmid with an HA affinity tag for red fluorescent protein (RFP)—preparing the tagged protein for purification through chromatography. 🧪🧬
Students can build skills in:
🔹 Bioinformatics & data science
🔹 Primer design
🔹 PCR & restriction enzymes
🔹 DNA ligation
🔹 Pipetting & molecular biology techniques
🔹 Column chromatography
🔹 Protein purification concepts
Perfect for upper-secondary advanced biology/biotechnology students looking for an authentic, industry-connected laboratory experience!
