HCRA HCRA HCRA formed first as a collaboration between two wholly formed design studios and ended as a marriage that combined the strengths of both.

Harriett Hatch and Luis Colasuonno of Hatch-Colasuonno bring with them more than thirty years of experience, particularly in the areas of urban renewal, multi-family and mixed use architecture. They evolved a working methodology which results in comprehensive and quality design responses, even when confronted with very tight schedules, limited budgets and varied programs. After designing and build

ing more than two thousand residential units, several LEED silver, gold and platinum projects, they have become highly familiar with the challenges associated with creating special needs housing and related support services for disabled people, homeless or abused children, the elderly, and for impoverished families. Tima Bell and Scott Sullivan of Relativity Architects met during their graduate studies at the Southern California Institute of Architecture and have been collaborating since before their graduation in 1999. Their practice has excelled in projects ranging from high-end hospitality, mixed use retail, single family residences and motion picture production campuses. Their concern for a balanced approach between quality and efficiency has made them exceed the limitations of conventional construction methodologies into the realm of using alternative materials and forms to provide architectural solutions. The combination of these design professionals into one firm, with the support of an accomplished design staff and roster of experienced consultants allows HCRA to tackle projects with complex mixes of programmatic requirements and deliver them on time, within budget, and with the highest quality of design.

We're excited to announce that the San Juan Island House was featured in DREAM HOMES. Designed by Luis A. Colasuonno and Harriett E. Hatch.

Luis writes, "The H/C residence grew out of our desire to spend time in the Pacific NW and to give form to our belief in architecture as a dialog between the human-made and natural world. The site had never been developed. It was an impenetrable forest of blackberries bushes entwined around a variety of native trees. The one and one half acre property slopes slightly upwards from the road and clearly had a unique character with the clumps of very tall cedars, scrub pines, majestic maples, and alders among others.

Our first reaction was to identify and map the primary natural forces and then design a house that both acknowledged and respected those natural forces while attending to our own needs for living, working, and entertaining. Thus the house is composed of a series of pavilions set in the landscape which have been placed gradually and sequentially higher in concert with the rising topography. The pavilions are connected with a double-height gallery that houses an extensive collection of Hatty’s art she has been producing for years."

HCRA ARCHIVES: Today we are revisiting the construction site of the Park Plaza renovations. This project required cutting into the existing building to add on additional rooms. It is usually a complicated dance tying in the new structure with the existing structure. In this case, our design worked seamlessly, and we could not have been more pleased with the outcome.

Here are few shots of the construction process last year:

Here's a look at the Green Hoops Competition project we participated in. This project will provide a public space for the community. Specially designed pavers lead park goers through the park to a variety of activities, in particular, the basketball court. Although we did not win the competition, we are proud of our design and wanted to share it. These renderings represent our design proposal. Check out more images of the project below:
