Santa Barbara authorities have successfully prosecuted a 35-year-old city resident under a new California law that criminalizes the creation, possession, and distribution of AI-generated child s*xual abuse materials (CSAM).

The case against Dayton Aldrich, who worked for the City of Santa Barbara as a community development specialist when he was arrested in August 2025, is among the first on the Central Coast to utilize the new legislation.

Assembly Bill 1831 was drafted in response to the emergence of deepfake technology and “nudify” apps capable of creating images indistinguishable from real photographs. It closed a legal loophole by including AI-generated materials under existing state penal code for CSAM and is meant to combat the subsequent explosion of illicit content across the dark web.

At the time of his arrest, Aldrich was the board president of the Wi******er Canyon Gun Club and was known to keep multiple fi****ms at his apartment. Police surprised him in the middle of the night and took him into custody without incident. They seized more than 20 registered guns, high-capacity magazines, body armor, and approximately 10,000-15,000 rounds of ammunition.

Though Aldrich initially faced a number of felony charges, he ultimately pleaded guilty to a single count of possessing CSAM. With no prior criminal history, he was sentenced to a year in county jail, two years of probation, and a mandatory lifetime s*x offender registration. Shortly after his arrest, Aldrich was fired from his city job and voted off the board of the gun club.

BREAKING NEWS: MAY 5, 2026 — REMAINS FOUND IN CAMARILLO IN 1993 IDENTIFIED, VCSO SEEKS INPUT FROM THE PUBLIC ON THE VICTIM

Remains found in an unincorporated area of Camarillo in 1993 have been identified and the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office is asking anyone with any information regarding Joseph Patrick Reardon, who would have been about 23 at the time of his discovery, to contact them.
According to a VCSO news release, on August 30, 1993, partial human remains were discovered during the clean-up of a dump site located off Beardsley Road, a short distance north of Wright Road, in an unincorporated area outside the City of Camarillo. The Ventura County Medical Examiner responded to the scene and collected the remains for further analysis. The ME confirmed the remains were human and sent them to be analyzed by an anthropologist. The partial human remains were determined to be the lower leg bones of a male subject and to be that of a male individual between the ages of 13 and 18 years old. He was known thereafter as “Camarillo Teen 1993” and details of the case were entered into the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System.
In March 2025, the forensic evidence provided the Ventura County Sheriff's Office was submitted to Othram Labs to determine if advanced DNA testing could aid in identifying the remains. Othram scientists successfully developed a DNA extract from the provided evidence and then used Forensic-Grade Genome Sequencing® to build a comprehensive DNA profile for the person. Othram then provided the VCSO’s Cold Case Unit with new genealogy leads to help with the identification.
The Cold Case Unit investigated the genealogy leads provided by Othram.
“The intricate nature of the work conducted by members of the Cold Case Unit in these types of cases,” noted the VCSO’s news release, “creates a sense of ownership by the investigators. During this investigation members of the Cold Case Unit began to refer to the unidentified deceased male as “Camarillo Teen 1993”.
The Cold Case Unit went to work using Forensic Investigative Genetic Genealogy (FIGG), conducted numerous interviews, telephone calls, and identified possible close relatives of “Camarillo Teen 1993”. Reference DNA samples were collected from potential relatives and compared to the DNA profile of “Camarillo Teen 1993” using KinSNP Rapid Relationship Testing.
Through diligent investigative work, the Cold Case Unit has made a significant breakthrough, the individual long known as "Camarillo Teen 1993" has been positively identified as Joseph Patrick Reardon, born June 17, 1970.
Despite this milestone, critical details surrounding Mr. Reardon's life and whereabouts remain unknown. The Cold Case Unit is actively seeking the public's help.
If you knew Joseph Patrick Reardon, also known as Joe Gilbreth, even in passing, we urge you to come forward. Any detail, no matter how small, could be the key to bringing answers and closure to this case. Please contact the Cold Case Unit with any information you may have.
