Meet dpxaker: Long unique passwords are too much work for him!

Dariy Pankov, known among hackers as “dpxaker,” paid for his lavish lifestyle by selling password cracking software to criminals for just $250 – no subscription required. Powered by his program, hackers don’t have to sit in a dark room guessing passwords one at a time – dpxaker’s software and AI tests thousands of password combinations every second. These hackers love pet names and birthdays – they really love short passwords and reused passwords!

DON’T MAKE LIFE EASY FOR DPXAKER

- Every password should be at least 16 characters long
- Every password needs to be unique to the account
- Every password should be a random mix of letters, numbers, and symbols

Use a password manager to create and store awesome passwords – they are safe, easy to use, and many are even free!

An 8-character password can be cracked in seconds, no matter how many &s and !s you use. A complex 16-character password takes billions of years to crack – and hackers don’t have that kind of time!

We have been told that Frontier has an outage such that their system will accept only calls from their own system, and that this is causing problems with the 911 lines.

Hardy Telecommunications, Inc., would like to thank everyone who attended our Annual Meeting of Members on Friday, October 2, 2026, at the East Hardy High School gymnasium. About 400 people showed up to enjoy the meal and recognize the re-election of two directors to new terms.

Two directors will serve new three-year terms after being re-elected by acclamation. Those are Ward A. Malcolm II of Moorefield for the South Fork serving area and Laura E. Kessel for Director-At-Large.

Hardy Telecommunications thanks the EHHS Band and Band Boosters, FFA, ProStart, Band Director Colton Watts, Hardy employees Philip Miller and Westly Martinez, and EHHS staff and faculty, who prepared and served the meal featuring pork barbecue. We appreciate their hard work!

October is National Cybersecurity Awareness Month. Let's make life difficult for cybercriminals!

Staying safe online isn’t about making one perfect decision. It’s about building habits and repeating them consistently in the small moments that happen every day. In doing this, we can all make life difficult for cybercriminals.

We’ll be sharing true stories of cybercriminals and their victims. Relatable, everyday situations that many people encounter.

These materials will show how a few practical habits (long passwords, password managers, MFA, updated software, and phishing awareness) can help people better protect themselves, their accounts, their workplaces, and their communities.

Cybersecurity doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Slow down! Stay aware! Practice a few key behaviors. This way, everyone can build safer habits, one day at a time.

Some more good news? The habits that protect you most are simple, free, and faster than you’d expect. You don’t need to be a tech expert. You just need a little motivation.

For the past decade, all Hardy County K-12 students have received free admission to the Hardy Bowl high school football game between East Hardy and Moorefield. That tradition will continue for the 2026 Hardy Bowl October 16 at Yellow Jacket Field as Hardy Telecommunications and Capon Valley Bank once again are teaming up to sponsor student admissions.

All Hardy County students in grades K-12 will receive free admission at the gate, courtesy of Hardy Telecom and Capon Valley Bank. Kick-off is slated for 7 p.m.

“Capon Valley Bank had the idea to do this back in 2017, and they asked us if we’d like to participate,” said Derek Barr, Assistant General Manager/Chief Regulatory and Compliance Officer for Hardy Telecommunications. “We’ve kept it up since then. We thank the Moorefield and East Hardy athletic departments and administrators for their cooperation, because they make it easy for us to help the students each year.

“It’s hard to believe we’ve been doing it for this long,” he said. “Both Hardy Tel and CVB have a commitment to support our students, and of course the Hardy Bowl is a great rivalry for our county. We want all students to be able to come out and support their teams.”

Capon Valley Bank Assistant Vice President for Loans Kris Kerr said the initial idea came up 10 years ago because the tradition of the Hardy Bowl offered the opportunity to support all Hardy County students.

“The athletes and supporting organizations put in a lot of work to bring this game to their fans every year. It touches so many students – not just the players, but the bands, cheerleaders, and volunteers as well. We’re happy that Hardy Telecommunications agreed to join us in this effort, and we wish good luck to both teams and hope everyone comes out to cheer on their team,” he said.

Derek said the free admission is available for all K-12 students in Hardy County. Hardy Telecommunications and Capon Valley Bank are both business partners with East Hardy High School, but the Hardy Bowl sponsorship is a countywide student benefit, he said.

Capon Valley Bank, a subsidiary of Highlands Bankshares, is a community-oriented neighborhood bank dedicated to serving local customers since July 1918. It has branches in Wardensville, Moorefield, and Baker in West Virginia and in Gore and Stephens City in Virginia.

Just as the spring provides a terrific opportunity to do a top-to-bottom cleaning (house, car, devices…), the beginning of fall is a great time to revisit your security habits. After all, this is the season for downloading football streaming apps, traveling in and out of secure Wi-Fi spaces, and – of course! – online shopping.

Here are a couple security refreshers to make sure all your devices remain secure this season:

1. Bolster your passwords (plural). That’s right, the days of “one password to rule them all!” are long dead. When you update your passwords, follow these guidelines:
- Use multifactor authentication.
- Choose passwords that are hard to guess. If you have trouble remembering such passwords, try a password manager.
- Use security questions correctly. Choose answers to questions that only you know, not answers that can be guessed from your social media accounts. That means no references to your favorite team, pet, food, or child.
- Log out of sites (especially sensitive or financial) after each use. The extra seconds it takes to log in will be worth the time and money saved if someone tries to hack you.

2. Avoid dodgy networks. Wi-Fi is nice to have when you’re out shopping or at a coffee shop, but be mindful that choosing a public network exposes all your data to potential threats. Consider a personal hotspot or, if you must connect to public Wi-Fi, use a Virtual Private Network (VPN) and ensure your antivirus software is up to date.

3. Don’t be a phish. If you receive an email or text from someone you don’t recognize or expect, do NOT click any links or open attached files. Included in such phishing expeditions are emails that look legitimate but (a) ask for your password or PIN, (b) implore you “act now!”, or (c) has a return email address that doesn’t match the expected sender.

4. Update, update, update. Make sure whenever your phone or computer pushes out an update that you complete the process immediately (usually overnight). These patches ensure new vulnerabilities are addressed and you remain protected from malware and hacks.

Now that you’ve done all the required fall cleaning, go get yourself a nice pumpkin spice [insert coffee/muffin/cake] and enjoy a worry-free internet scroll!

What’s better than Paris in the springtime, Germany at Christmastime, or the Vatican at 2 in the morning when there are no lines? Seeing these marvels while in your jammies and for free.

As travel seems out of reach for many of us due to family and work constraints and (of course) the cost of both domestic and international travel, visiting the world’s most exquisite museums and historical sites seems impossible. But many of these spots now offer virtual tours, allowing you to explore at your leisure from your table or computer. As long as you have a solid WiFi connection, you can wander through ancient artifacts, zoom in on priceless works of art, and even get your questions answered without having to wait in a single line!

Travel + Leisure provides links to more than a dozen of the famous destinations to visit at https://www.travelandleisure.com/attractions/museums-galleries/museums-with-virtual-tours. Some of the must-sees include:

The British Museum (London)
The real thing could take you days to explore, but a virtual tour through these famed galleries gives you stop-and-start access to some of history’s finest treasures from around the world. From the Aztecs to the Greeks to the actual Rosetta Stone, this museum is a history buff’s dream.

The Vatican Museums (Vatican City)
No ticket to Rome required. Virtual tours let you explore some of the Vatican Museums’ magnificent spaces, including Raphael’s Rooms and the Sistine Chapel. Best of all, you can lie on your own carpet, tablet held aloft, staring at Michelangelo’s famous ceiling as long as you like!

The Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum (Washington, D.C.)
Prefer airplanes to paintings? Explore the Smithsonian’s remarkable collection online, including the Wright Flyer and Neil Armstrong’s Apollo 11 spacesuit. You can even take virtual tours inside the cockpits of several historic aircraft.

The Frida Kahlo Museum (Mexico City)
Step inside Casa Azul, the colorful home where artist Frida Kahlo was born, lived, and worked. Online visitors can explore the house, garden, kitchen, and studio, where her wheelchair still sits beside her easel.

These virtual tours are the perfect getaway for a rainy afternoon – or even to prepare for an actual visit. The only one that would leave you wanting? The Guggenheim. Sure, the virtual tour is great, but roller skating through your dining room can never compete with rolling through the real thing!

Go on. Get out there. Your brain and your wallet will thank you.
