40 years. It only took 40 years!
I've been reminded of this saying more than once, in this past week alone:
"Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life." ~ Confucius
It only took me 40 years to find the job I truly love, with all my heart.
Don't get me wrong. I've have thoroughly enjoyed some of the jobs I've had.
Especially my tenure in the homebuilding industry, where I was fortunate enough to spend most of my time. Helping people achieve the "American Dream" could not have been more rewarding. In the homebuilding industry we worked VERY hard. And we played VERY hard. Ha! And "back in the day," before the market crash of 2007/2008, it was AMAZING.
I also loved being in the health and wellness industry. It just spoke to my personal passion of wanting to be the healthiest version of myself I can possibly be. Additionally, it afforded me the opportunity to join a running club and complete a bucket list goal. I ran the Chicago Marathon on 10-10-10 in sub 4 hours!
But, since this summer marks 40 years that I've been in the workforce it dawned on me that it took me that long to find the work I absolutely love with all my heart.
In a nutshell, the work I do now improves the quality of life for others. It takes stress off their hearts and minds. It allows them to attend to other, more pressing tasks and initiatives. Ideally it may even allow them time to do something they enjoy the most with the people they enjoy the most.
I have a whole website that refers to the services I offer, www.TwentyFifthHour.biz. But funny enough, all of my work as of late isn't anything I advertise on my website!
I helped a Milliner in Middletown who was injured on vacation in January get her shop Derby ready. I helped the owner of a window company in Buckner file mechanics liens in Jefferson and Oldham counties. I organized an alternative space for a homeowner in Louisville to use as a closet because the closet in her master bedroom was tiny. I helped an executive get his second vehicle from his office in Louisville to his home in Indiana. And, most recently, I helped a dynamic new coffee shop in Anchorage during their first two weeks in business.
And each and every time I not only heard and felt the immense relief that came with assisting each of these clients, but I also literally saw it. Shoulders no longer up at ears due to stress. Smiles on faces. The shake that a body does from laughing. Tears in the eyes.
And you better believe I had tears in my eyes too ~ tears of absolute joy that not only was I able to improve that client's life so much, but I was able to improve the quality of my own life by doing something I absolutely LOVE.
I'm grateful that I never have to work another day in my life...and ironically enough, I'm so pleased to work harder for my clients than I've ever worked in my entire life.
