Our first topic: What can your bank tell you when suspicious activity or possible fraud involves your account?
Federal regulators recently clarified an important distinction:
Your bank cannot confirm or deny whether a Suspicious Activity Report (SAR) was filed, but that doesnโt mean it canโt discuss the activity that raised concerns.
Banks and credit unions may be able to discuss the transaction, request documentation, address suspected fraud, explain account restrictions or delays, and discuss steps you can take to resolve the concern.
If your account or transaction is questioned:
๐๏ธ Ask which transaction is under review.
๐๏ธ Ask what documentation is needed.
๐๏ธ Respond promptly and keep records.
๐๏ธ Keep business and personal finances separate.
๐๏ธ Have a backup banking plan for your business.
Better documentation can help you explain legitimate activity, address concerns, and reduce unnecessary disruptions.
