Let’s talk about su***de.
You may think “that’s a morbid topic”….
But it’s a needed topic. And on my professional LinkedIn feed it is becoming an epidemic. I find it interesting that it is increasingly prominent on LinkedIn but not my other social media sites.
Perhaps because people in work settings are beginning to talk about their health and their need for balance. But regardless of why, it is becoming a daily conversation.
And it should be.
I found out this weekend that I lost an old work friend to su***de.
And holidays become higher risk for su***de every year. This person took their life the Friday night after thanksgiving after posting a beautiful post on their FB account about their gratitude and their love of Thanksgiving and all of their amazing family memories.
And when I read it again after knowing that this person had taken their life, it was clear to me that it was a goodbye letter.
Tragic. Yes.
Senseless. Yes.
Preventable? Most probably. Addiction and a relapse was also involved. The chances of a person completing a su***de attempt while under the Influences of substances skyrockets.
So as we continue into the biggest and longest holiday season of our year, don’t assume everyone around you is fine. Check in. Ask. Pay attention to people around you. Trust your instincts and connect. Saying something will not Increase their chances of acting on that feeling. Be the hand of hope.
If you are the one struggling, please reach out. You can reach out to me here. Even if we don’t know each other well.
But don’t stay silent. And don’t assume everyone around you is smiling on the inside despite a smile on the outside.
Let’s talk about su***de.
