VPB Management Consulting Services Healthcare consultant, Executive Coach and sales and marketing leader

After Seminary and completing a degree in Pastoral Counseling, I landed in a behavioral health hospital working with addicted adolescents and obtained a certification in marriage and family therapy and a certificate in alcohol and drug counseling. That began a 35 + year career where I realized I was living my mission in a way I didn't plan but that was perfect for me. I spent a few years working

with clients but quickly transitioned to management and have ultimately worked across the country with multiple medium to large companies in sales, marketing, managing teams across the country and honing my skills as a healthcare executive with a therapist's heart for my approach to leadership. I have always dabbled on the side of my full time gigs doing management and sales consulting and now I am formalizing that as I get closer to retirement in a few years (hopefully!). Along the way, I have spent many hours helping mentor and guide other young professionals, guiding colleagues ready to make a career shift, or just working with other career women dealing with their struggles .... so I have combined my background as a therapist with my many years as an executive to add executive coaching to my plate. I welcome you to follow my page, check out my website and engage with me here as we all seek to be better professionals but even more importantly, better human beings.

Let’s talk about su***de.
You may think “that’s a morbid topic”….
But it’s a needed topic. And on my professional LinkedIn feed it is becoming an epidemic. I find it interesting that it is increasingly prominent on LinkedIn but not my other social media sites.

Perhaps because people in work settings are beginning to talk about their health and their need for balance. But regardless of why, it is becoming a daily conversation.

And it should be.
I found out this weekend that I lost an old work friend to su***de.

And holidays become higher risk for su***de every year. This person took their life the Friday night after thanksgiving after posting a beautiful post on their FB account about their gratitude and their love of Thanksgiving and all of their amazing family memories.

And when I read it again after knowing that this person had taken their life, it was clear to me that it was a goodbye letter.

Tragic. Yes.
Senseless. Yes.
Preventable? Most probably. Addiction and a relapse was also involved. The chances of a person completing a su***de attempt while under the Influences of substances skyrockets.

So as we continue into the biggest and longest holiday season of our year, don’t assume everyone around you is fine. Check in. Ask. Pay attention to people around you. Trust your instincts and connect. Saying something will not Increase their chances of acting on that feeling. Be the hand of hope.

If you are the one struggling, please reach out. You can reach out to me here. Even if we don’t know each other well.

But don’t stay silent. And don’t assume everyone around you is smiling on the inside despite a smile on the outside.

Let’s talk about su***de.

Ever felt like you struggle to “sell yourself”? Get to the next level in your career by making your value known? Survive in a corporate culture that doesn’t feel like it is looking at the right things about their employees?

The work world is hard these days and having a good support system as an individual to talk through work challenges and decide how to move forward can be a real asset. Or maybe you are moving into a new career phase or trying to decide if it is time to do so.

I love doing coaching. It brings out all my old therapist feels and puts all my leadership experience to best use to help others get where they want to go. Check me out if you are in the market for some coaching support - feel free to peruse my website too … www.vpbmanagementconsulting.com

( and I can help you polish up that resume too if you’d like and show you how to highlight your lightbulb changing skills! 😜)

I’ve been working in the mental health and addiction field for almost 4 decades and have been focused on finally building out my consulting practice this year! I’m evaluating plans and partnerships for the new year and really trying to decide what brings me energy while still making an impact. I have a lot of cool irons in the fire and am looking for discernment about what I want to have matter about my work for the next few years.

How do YOU feel about your work and what do you do that puts a smile on your face? What do you want your “better place” to look like? Staving off burnout and fostering growth from year to year takes intention…. Do you agree? Would love to hear your thoughts!

Learning to delegate to your team with confidence does more than just get the work done more effectively. It also reduces your stress and load and allows you to put your energy to other priorities, it empowers the individual you put your confidence in, it exposes others in your organization to a wider range of ideas from a more diverse group of colleagues and it builds appreciation and a feeling of value within your organization.

Train well, give the right support, delegate and then step back and let them step up.

Not always easy but always a healthy way to lead!

Ever feel like this in the office or at work? I’ve been in the workplace for almost 40 years and on the topic of time management I still feel like I still take 1 step forward and 2 steps backwards on this at times. And I have definitely learned that what works for me may not work for you and vice versa. But it’s a critical skill in the workplace and I have developed a few approaches over the years that really help. Like not diving into your email in the morning first thing.
If you’d like to know why I suggest that and are interested in some help in this area, I’d love to help!

What is something you’d like to stretch yourself further on professionally?
One thing for me is to build out a couple of talks that I could potentially offer to speak in front of groups about. You?

We have 2 cats ( less than 2 years old) and 2 dogs ( both over 10 years old). We call them our zoo. They are my “office staff” and make my days so much brighter!! Yesterday my son and his girlfriend and his cat ( sibling to my cats) went back to school. Finn seemed a little more needy and cuddly than even normal as the house got quieter. So I took a little time at my desk for extra love ( or should I say he demanded it 😜).

Are you a pet owner? How do they bring joy to your day?
A day without joy is a rough day!

These guys constantly enhance mine!

Self care and executive leadership used to be seen as somewhat exclusionary of each other when I began to grow my career. Increasingly we are recapturing the importance of this for both our sanity and our professional development. This piece from the Harvard Review is spot on. I would love to hear some of the things you do to foster self care in your work world. Tell me your tips in the comments below! I’ll start…

Self-care is no longer a luxury for busy leaders; it’s part of the job. But what exactly is self-care and how do you do it? At the heart of self-care is your relationship and connection to self; it means that you understand what you need to be your most constructive, effective, and authentic self....

As I continue to grow as a professional, I find that the places I continue to be stretched and learn to grow tend more towards learning to manage my emotions. As a leader, how I help others manage theirs is often where I get the most “bang for my buck”. I am always looking to attain more skills and more knowledge. But without emotional intelligence as a leader I find those skills don’t necessarily get me much further. And emotional intelligence needs self care to be effective too.
So today, spend more time listening and seeing with your heart. Your team, your co-workers, your clients and your family will thank you.
