Make a point to get to know the admission counselor at the schools where you are applying. Many schools will list on their website who each counselor is responsible for, sometimes broken down by alphabet, sometimes by location. Developing a relationship with them, even over email, is a great way to help them remember your name and for them to go the extra mile if you need help along the way.

There is a chill in the air this morning. What's your favorite fall tradition? What do you think next fall on campus will be like?

Ask about graduation rates and employment rates of alumni when meeting with admission counselors. You want to know how strong their alumni network is, how strong their campus work placement office is, and how committed they are to student success beyond graduation.

Don't let prices give you sticker shock. It's rare for anyone to pay full price for college. Be sure to look at "cost of attendance" on their websites, not just tuition costs. COA will give you a fuller picture of the financial investment for each school.

How many schools is your student applying to? Six to ten is the sweet spot, in my opinion. A couple of safety schools, a couple of reach schools, and a couple of midrange schools where the student would be happy to spend four years is a great list. Keep in mind that most schools require an application fee, ranging from $30 to $100 so if you have a limited budget, plan accordingly.

An amazing and practical gift for your student when they leave for school next year is a binder filled with gift cards and/or cash for their first year on campus. Buying one every couple of weeks throughout the school year creates a fantastic gift without the burden of spending everything all at once. Add a gift card to your shopping list every now and then and you will have the perfect surprise for them next fall. Add a sweet note to each page in the binder along with the gift card and you have a gift they will never forget.

Parents, now is a great time to create a memorable gift for when your student leaves for campus next year. A letter or note to them as each milestone is passed throughout senior year and given to them when they arrive on campus is a sweet way to remind them of how much you love them.

Check with your school counselor about their policies and procedures for requesting transcripts and counselor reports for schools. Some schools have several steps to their process and you want to know them well before any deadline you are up against. Some schools require a fee if you request items too close to the date you need them. It's best to be aware of all policies early in the process.
