"That one extra comment, that one extra thing can go a long way."

When Phil was 14 and in trouble at school, a football coach gave him the lecture he had coming, then offered him something he didn't expect: his number, in case he ever needed someone to talk to. Phil still remembers it.

Now he spreads the same energy in small, silly ways, like the 50-cent fake-mustache gumball machine he keeps here at Story.

You've been networking wrong, and it's not your fault.

Most networking advice was written for one kind of person and handed to everyone. Anna Shulgina, founder of WorkYourNet, unpacked why in our October newsletter, and the research surprised us.

A University of Helsinki study found acting outgoing made people happier in the moment, introverts and extroverts alike. A few hours later, everyone crashed. So the real difference isn't who gets tired. It's how you connect. Some people go wide, others go deep, and both work.

The fix:
Aim for two real conversations instead of working the whole room.
Jot a quick note after each one.
Recover on purpose, extroverts too.

Procrastination. Executive functioning. The stuff we're told to fix.

Our founder Natalia used to see those traits as huge flaws. Now she is simply aware and sees a brain that works differently, and realizes there’s a lot more power in rest than she ever gave it credit for.

She equates it to being a Ferrari with bicycle brakes.

Our Día de los Mu***os ofrenda is officially up and ready for photos, and it's one of our favorite things to come to at Story this time of year. We had help from our member Cruz, who brings his Oaxacan roots to the table (literally).

An ofrenda is a way of welcoming loved ones back (furry ones included), and members are welcome to add photos of their own. We can’t wait to celebrate our loved ones together at our members' happy hour next week.

Introducing The Story Board, where we ask our members a question and let them settle it in chalk.

First up: the best place to eat in NuLu. The votes so far go to Lou Lou on Market, Mayan Cafe, Moon Dog and Butchertown Bakery Grocery, and one member drew a heart next to LouLou's, so take that as you will. Honorable mention to Mussel & Burger Bar, which made the board even though it's just outside NuLu.

Today we present This or That: Sabor Latino Edition. Story’s founder and proud Colombiana, Natalia, sure didn't hesitate.

Our favorite answer was "ojímetro," the Latin American way of measuring a recipe: by eye, until it looks right. If no one in your family has ever used a measuring cup, you already know.

As a Latina-owned and operated business, Story is celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month, which runs through October 15. Watch to the end and tell us which of her picks you'd argue with.

Phil's case for kindness to strangers is simple: hold the door, give the kind word, and maybe don't flip someone off for an honest mistake in traffic.

The part we keep thinking about is where he says it came from. Coworkers who could hear something negative and find three good takes on it, and meant every one. Turns out that stuff rubs off when you work around the right people.

In a new Korn Ferry survey of more than 16,000 professionals across 11 countries, 61% said they're now doing the work of more than one role. That means a lot of switching gears, and every switch costs more than you'd think.

When you jump from one task to another, part of your attention stays behind on the last one. Researchers call it attention residue, and it's why you can read the same email three times after a meeting and still not know what it said.

Sophie Leroy of UW Bothell and Theresa Glomb of the University of Minnesota tested a simple fix. Before switching, take about a minute to jot down three things: where you left off, what's still tricky, and what you're putting off until later. People who wrote this quick "ready-to-resume" note made better decisions and remembered more on their next task.

Interruptions are going to happen. A quick note means you won't lose your place when they do.
