Last week, I shared types of conflicts. Now, let's look at the causes of conflict.

Conflict rarely starts with one dramatic event. More often, it builds from everyday issues: frustration, different levels of commitment, lack of accountability, unclear expectations, communication failures, different work styles, or disagreements over ideas.

What I find interesting about this list is how many of these causes are preventable leadership issues.

Clear expectations can reduce confusion. Accountability can prevent resentment. Better communication can stop assumptions from becoming conflict. And creating an environment where people can respectfully disagree can turn competing ideas into better ones.

You may not be able to eliminate conflict from your organization, but you can influence the conditions that either create it or resolve it.

Labor Day is supposed to be a break from work. But when was the last time you really took one?

For many experienced executives, working hard has simply become the norm. Long days, packed calendars, emails after hours, and vacations that still somehow include work.

At some point, you may start asking whether the career you built still fits the life you want.

Becoming a Focal Point Business Coaching Business & Executive Coach gives experienced professionals the opportunity to put years of business and leadership experience to work helping others, while building a business with more control over their own schedule.

You can still work hard and do meaningful work. The difference is having more say in when, where, and how you do it.

This Labor Day, maybe the question isn't whether you need another day off.

Maybe it's whether you're ready for a different way to work.

What do you think of these numbers?

According to this FocalPoint conflict-management material, interpersonal issues account for 34% of workplace conflict, followed closely by management issues at 28%. Behavioral issues represent 15%, disagreements around creativity and ideas 13%, and differences in work style 10%.

What stands out to me is that the two largest categories have very little to do with strategy, technology, or technical ability. They come down to people and leadership.

That’s an important reminder for anyone leading a team. We spend a lot of time teaching people how to do their jobs, but are we spending enough time teaching them how to communicate, manage differences, give feedback, and work through conflict?

Conflict can happen almost anywhere in a business. Between executives. Between a manager and an employee. Between coworkers, departments, divisions, or even your company and a vendor.

The goal of strong leadership isn’t to eliminate conflict. It’s to make sure people know how to work through it productively.

When leaders create an environment where people can disagree respectfully, listen to different perspectives, and address issues before they grow, conflict can actually lead to better communication, stronger relationships, and better decisions.

So instead of asking, “How do we avoid conflict?” try asking, “Have we given our people the skills to handle it well?”

Because wherever people work together, differences will exist.

How we lead through those differences is what matters.

I need a new job.

Well, I don't, I love mine but there are a lot of people that are thinking this as summer wraps up. There's something about September that makes us evaluate our summer and many people will find theirs lacking enough adventure.

Time is our most precious resource, so we shouldn't waste it working in a job that doesn't bring us joy. Do you love your job?

Who remembers there little guy being this age waiting for the bus on his first day of school?

The time goes by so fast and before you know it, they are starting their last year of school. What happens then?

I work with so many young men who did exactly what we expected them to do. They played sports, studied hard, got scholarships, went to college and then when graduation comes around, they feel lost.

Unfortunately, school doesn't teach everything we need to know to be successful. That's why I founded KYKEON COACHING COMPANY. We help young men find their purpose so they can put to use all the knowledge they've attained in school.

School is in session! Do you remember those first days of school? If you're my age, you also probably remember the smell of a chalkboard 😊

I also looked forward to what some of my teachers would have up there on the first day. Some would just have the list of school supplies, or their name, but some would have that really cool quote to motivate us.

Today, I thought I'd revive that feeling for you. If you're "back-to-work" from summer fun and not feeling the same motivation you felt in the past, I have some advice.

Reinvent yourself.

It might sound crazy at first, but think about it. Why stay in a place you are done growing? Why stay somewhere you aren't really happy? Why not make a change?

Wouldn't it be great to love what you do every day?

Is your goal written down, or is it still just something you're thinking about?

Brian Tracy has long emphasized the importance of written goals. He argues that putting a goal in writing creates greater clarity about what you want, helps you prioritize what matters, and gives you something tangible to measure your progress against.

"I want to grow" isn't a goal.

"I want to improve profitability" isn't a goal.

"I want to spend less time working in the business" isn't a goal.

Write down exactly what you want to accomplish. Make it measurable. Give it a deadline. Then identify the actions that will move you toward it.

A written goal gives you a target against which you can evaluate your decisions, your priorities, and even how you spend your time.
