How does an individual "make a living" during these days of unprecedented information explosion? First of all, let’s correct that…”earn a living.”

I believe that we are paid money by making money or creating value for our client or employer.

It’s that simple, but we may find ourselves competing with technology in doing so. A computer and its software is more efficient and oftentimes less expensive than a human being, so how do we reconcile this disparity, earning a living AND having a life and not feeling like the proverbial "tail wagging the dog"

The answer is complex because it asks that all of us to embrace our uniqueness and our special gifts. We need to redefine a life of quality, refusing to compete with technology which is flourishing in our “massified" economy. One truth that is immutable...no one individual can be another, and it is ultimately unproductive comparing ourselves as we go about our work life. We can only compare our outputs, yet we fall the test by competing for attention, authority and compensation.

Competition is a tool by which those who "have" can convince those who don’t that working harder (sometimes losing ourselves in the process) will allow us to buy something that we believe will make us happy. We unknowingly become pawns of employers who can manipulate us to do what they want us to do, and under their terms…
