This week’s Word of the Week: Winter Annual.

A winter annual is a plant that germinates in the fall, survives the winter and completes its life cycle the following spring or early summer.

For both vegetation management and turf & ornamental professionals, fall can be an important time to manage winter annual w**ds. At this stage, many are small and actively growing - before they mature, flower and produce seed.

Understanding the w**d’s life cycle helps determine not only what to control, but when to control it.

Good conversations in Iowa this week!

Nutrien Solutions’ Bill Walker is at the Iowa Fall Integrated Roadside Vegetation Management (IRVM) meeting, connecting with county roadside managers.

Discussions focused on AquPac custom blending and container size options to fit the needs of roadside vegetation management programs.

Good vegetation management starts with good field research.

Nutrien Solutions’ John Paul Culligan recently participated in the County W**d Superintendents’ Meeting and herbicide field tour at Harpster Grade near Grangeville, Idaho.

Now in its second year, this three-year collaborative project between Nutrien Solutions, Corteva and Idaho County is evaluating herbicide treatments for controlling wild rose and other woody vegetation.

The field tour gave participants an opportunity to walk the test plots, compare treatments and discuss what’s working in the field.

A great example of collaboration, research and knowledge-sharing to help advance vegetation management.

Stephanie and Jennifer Myers were recognized for 20 years of dedication and contributions to FAPMS and the aquatic plant management industry.

Thank you to the North American Invasive Species Management Association (NAISMA) for sharing this look at how custom blending and closed-transfer systems are helping advance invasive species management in the field.

These approaches can help crews improve efficiency, safety and stewardship while reducing product handling and downtime.

Protect the places you love to hunt—for this season and generations to come. With just a few extra minutes of care, hunters can help stop invasive species in their tracks and keep Wisconsin’s wetlands and waterways thriving.

Simple Prevention Steps Every Hunter Can Take
Before entering and leaving any waterbody, be sure to:

• Inspect waders, boats, trailers, motors, and hunting gear — including boots, blinds, and dogs.
• Remove all plants, animals, and mud.
• Drain water from decoys, boats, motors, and other equipment.
• Never move live fish or plants from one waterbody to another.
• Remove seed heads and roots from vegetation used in duck blinds.
