Two of the country's top transportation attorneys did not sugarcoat it: the environment created by the Supreme Court's Montgomery ruling is pressing hardest on small carriers and owner-operators, and consolidation is already underway.

FreightWaves spoke with both attorneys separately about what the decision actually changed, what large carriers are already planning, and what independent operators can do right now to stay in business.

Client Support Specialist (Part-Time) — Lubbock, TX
$16–19/hr · Monday–Friday, 9:00 AM–3:00 PM · In office
TrueDOT is a growing transportation technology company. We build software that helps trucking companies replace paperwork with something that actually works.
We're hiring one person to help our clients get set up and get answers — guiding them through onboarding, organizing their records, chasing down what's missing, and being the person they're glad to hear from.
This is a good fit if you:
Like creating order out of chaos
Pick up new software quickly (and actually enjoy it)
Are organized, dependable, and good with people
Want to help build something, not just fill a seat

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) has released new guidance to help truck drivers recognize and respond to driver coercion — when companies, shippers, receivers, or brokers pressure drivers to break safety regulations.
The Coercion Rule (in effect since 2016) protects drivers from being forced to violate rules on hours-of-service, CDL requirements, drug & alcohol testing, vehicle maintenance, and more. Drivers can report coercion to FMCSA, which can result in penalties for the offending company.
Key Points from FMCSA’s New FAQ Guidance:
• Coercion includes threats to withhold loads, reduce pay, fire, or take other adverse actions if the driver refuses to violate rules.
• Examples include pressuring drivers to exceed HOS limits, falsify logs, operate unsafe equipment, or drive while fatigued.
• Drivers should document everything (texts, emails, conversations) and object clearly when asked to violate rules.
• Complaints must be filed within 90 days through FMCSA’s National Consumer Complaint Database.
FMCSA emphasizes that even a threat counts as coercion — the driver does not have to actually break the rule. Employers are also prohibited from retaliating against drivers who report coercion.
This guidance is important for all truck drivers. Knowing your rights can help protect your safety and livelihood.

Friday’s Heat Illness Prevention safety meeting was a success.

We were so busy presenting, answering questions, involving drivers and mechanics in the discussion, and handing out hard hat sombreros and cooling towels that we barely remembered to take pictures.

That’s okay. At Ethos Safety Solutions, the mission comes before the photo. We believe in the topics we teach and invest in the people who keep our clients moving. Through training, knowledge, and PPE, we strive to deliver value that goes beyond expectations.

We’re also excited to welcome Mardy Dominguez to the Ethos team. Mardy will be helping support our West Texas operations and brings years of hands-on transportation and oilfield trucking experience. Having known Mardy for over six years, I know he shares the same commitment to service and results that we pride ourselves on at Ethos.

Cheers to Mardy, the Ethos team, and the clients who continue to trust us. We are truly blessed, and there are great things ahead.

No promises. Only results.

🎉 Driver Appreciation Giveaway 🎉

At Ethos Safety Solutions, we value our clients, and that means we value their employees too. We believe in having skin in the game and investing in the people who help make our clients successful.

During a recent safety meeting, we raffled off a $600 Santa Maria Grill, and I couldn’t have been happier to see Mr. Rufino take it home. He’s a great guy, works hard, and is well deserving of it.

We don’t just talk about supporting our clients—we invest our own time, energy, and resources to help build stronger teams, show appreciation to drivers, and deliver results.

Congratulations, Rufino, and thank you to all the drivers for everything you do.

No promises. Only results.
