We’re excited to share the beginning stages of another major home transformation by Vieira Building & Home Improvement.

This project is much more than simply adding square footage. We’re creating a completely new living and entertaining space that will feel like it was always part of the home.

One of the biggest parts of this build was installing a flush structural beam into the second-floor system, allowing us to open up nearly the entire width of the existing house into the new addition. Instead of posts, dropped beams, or small openings breaking up the space, the homeowners are going to have one large, open transition into their new family room.

The finished project will feature:

🔨 A large, open-concept family room
🚪 Expansive doors bringing the indoor and outdoor spaces together
☀️ Tons of natural light
🏡 A large new deck built for entertaining family and friends
📐 A seamless connection between the existing home and the new addition

There are few things in life I enjoy more than building.

But if I’m being honest, those aren’t the most important things I build.

The greatest thing I’ll ever build is my family.

Being a dad is my favorite job. Teaching my kids how to work with their hands, solve problems, stay curious, and take pride in doing things the right way means more to me than any project I’ll ever complete.

One of my favorite things is seeing the excitement in a child’s eyes when they’re learning something new. They don’t just want to watch—they want to help, ask questions, and be part of it. Those moments are priceless.

Because at the end of the day, we’re not just building projects—we’re building character, confidence, memories, and a family.

That’s the work that matters most.

The cheapest quote can end up being the most expensive.

When comparing contractors, make sure you’re comparing apples to apples. A quote that’s 20% cheaper today could cost far more later if important details are missing.

Here are a few things every homeowner should verify before signing a contract:

✅ Licensed & Registered

✅ Proper Liability & Workers’ Compensation Insurance

✅ Detailed Written Contract

✅ Clear Payment Schedule

✅ Recent References

✅ Required Permits

✅ Product & Labor Warranties

✅ Reputable Subcontractors

But don’t stop there…

Look closely at the quality of the work being proposed.

For example:

🔹 Decking

One contractor may install scalloped composite decking with exposed cut ends on every board.

Another may install picture-frame decking that hides all cut ends for a cleaner, more finished appearance.

🔹 Window Trim & Siding

One contractor may install exposed J-channel around windows.

Another may build the J-channel behind custom aluminum trim, creating a cleaner appearance and reducing areas where water can enter.

🏠 Siding Is Only Half the Protection

We’re currently replacing the siding and upgrading old casement windows with new construction casement windows on this home. While new siding gives a home a beautiful new look and protects it from the elements, what’s behind the siding is just as important.

Many homeowners don’t realize that water will eventually find its way behind siding. It may enter around a window, a roof-to-wall connection, a vent, or another pe*******on. Once water gets behind the siding, it needs a properly installed weather barrier to direct it safely back outside.

That’s where Tyvek and proper flashing come into play.

💧 Water naturally flows downhill. If water gets in around a window above, it can travel behind the siding and often find its way to a window or door below. Without proper flashing and underlayment, moisture can become trapped, leading to rot, mold, and costly structural repairs hidden behind the walls.
