The quality of a finished mount begins before it ever reaches the taxidermy shop.

If you may want a shoulder mount:

• Avoid cutting too far up the chest
• Do not cut into the brisket or throat area
• Keep the cape clean
• Cool it as quickly as possible
• Ask before cutting if you are unsure

A few careful decisions in the field can protect the cape and give your taxidermist what is needed to create the best finished piece possible.

It represents the early morning, the preparation, the miles walked, the people who were there, and the story you will tell long after the season ends.

The meat may fill the freezer, but good taxidermy preserves the part of the hunt you can see for years to come.

Hunting season is here, which means things are getting busy around Blair Artworks again.

We also know there are still folks patiently waiting on pieces already in the shop. Blair Artworks is primarily a one-man operation, and Jerrad would rather take the time to do a piece right than rush it out the door just to check another name off the list.

This season, the goal isn’t just taking care of what comes through the door. It’s also continuing to work through the backlog and making some serious headway once hunting season slows down.

We appreciate every person who has trusted us with an animal and, just as importantly, everyone who has given us patience along the way.

Quality takes time, but your memories deserve the time.

Hunting season has a funny way of making you think about everything EXCEPT what happens after you pull the trigger. 😂

If there’s even a chance that buck or bull is going on the wall, have a plan before you head out.

Keep it cool. Keep it clean. And for the love of your taxidermist, know where to cut before you start cutting. 😂

A few extra minutes of care in the field can make a huge difference in what we have to work with back at the shop.

Not sure how to cape it or what you need to save? Call us before you cut. We’d much rather answer a question beforehand than try to fix it afterward.
