Last night, 17 of our 20 High Prairie Fire Department members participated in our bi-monthly drill focused on progressive hose lays and pump operations in the wildland.
A progressive hose lay allows firefighters to rapidly extend hose lines across grass, brush, and timber fuels while maintaining a dependable water supply. Combined with effective pump operations, these skills are critical to quickly containing wildfires and protecting lives, property, and natural resources.
While our members trained at home, Captain Philip Haner was dispatched to the Wagon Wheel Fire in Benton City with one of our Water Tenders as part of Washington State Mobilization, putting these same skills to work on an active incident. Participating in these State Mobilizations provides our department some much needed funds.
Wildfire season is here, and our volunteers continue to dedicate evenings, weekends, and family time to ensure they are ready when our community—or communities across Washington—need help.
Preparedness doesn’t begin when the pager tones. It begins on training nights like this one.
