To celebrate 13 Years of 44 Bikes, I wanted to do something special that gives back to the community that’s given so much in some small way. For me, the journey all started with BMX. One of the companies that I always admired for their spirit, grit and commitment to Made in the USA was none other than FBM Bike Company.

Earlier this year, I reached out to one of the founders of FBM, Steve Crandall, to see if he’d give me permission to resurrect an old FBM BMX t-shirt and give it a new twist. Crandall approved and gave me permission to update the graphic. I really believe in RADshare’s non-profit mission and so all proceeds of the sale of the 44 Bikes 13th anniversary t-shirt will go to RADshare

I’ve searched far and wide for just the right cap. And as the saying goes: “If you want something done right, you gotta do it yourself.” Well…. That’s what I’ve had to do. First I start with a Richardson No. 256 “Umpqua”. Then I remove the dumb internal structure flap, cut off the rope and throw those where the sun doesn’t shine. Next I had my pal Sean Brewery Outfitters source some fine patches made to my specifications. Then I sew these bad boys on one by one here at 44HQ. And BEHOLD! You get the 44 Bike Co “I SHOULD BE FISH’N” cap.
-
The devil is in the details:
• Richardson Umpqua No. 256
• Modified here at 44HQ
• Mid-Rise / Low Profile
• Flat Brim / Unstructured
• SPF 50 for bald spots
• Snap back fits mist noggins
• light weight / COOL FIT
• “Loden” Green aka Olive Drab
• Blue, Green on White Patch
• PURE BUSINESS

And there it is. You know what to do.. Available now!

Head on over to The Radavist to check out a gallery of a handful of bikes I brought to the 2025 Philly Bike Expo . The Radavist was kind enough to host these photos I shot as they were not able to attend this years show. The gallery includes both steel Snakedriver's I had at the show (the complete was in Industry Nine booth).

The Marauder Ti. Often copied. Frequently overlooked. Never equaled. This is my attempt at the classic New England hardtail: A balance of low-slung, grounded perfection with an eye to straightforward, aggressive simplicity. Read all about it over on Bikepacking. https://bikepacking.com/news/44-bikes-marauder-and-snakedriver/

Friday the 13th, 2024: On December 31, 2024 I will be temporarily closing my custom list. As many of you know, I’ve been slowly working on a stock hardtail Marauder option and a 120mm travel full suspension bike to be named the Snakedriver. I need some dedicated and focused time to finish those projects up, get frames ISO tested and then officially launch them as small batch USA made frames from my shop in New Hampshire. So to facilitate that, I will work through my approximate 6 month backlog in 2025, make some much needed updates to tooling (specifically my frame jig so I will have 2) and then focus on the stock Marauder and Snakedriver projects.
-
Again, this will only be temporary and not a permanent feature. I’m going to expand on this via the 44HQ blog in the new year. But till then, if you’ve been on the fence.. you’ve got till December 31st to pull the trigger before I close my list to new orders. Any questions, please hit me up in the comments or email me directly.

Hurricane Helene Relief Effort //

I'd first like to extend my most heartfelt well wishes for all of you who were in the storms path. I hope essentials and aid can reach you as soon as humanly possible and I hope that everyone reading this is safe and healthy. As many of you have been reading and understanding the level of absolute destruction and hardship that Hurricane Helene has left in its wake, we all start to wonder how we can collectively take action to support those in need. A raffle has been set up by Jared Harber (IG Handle ) where all funds raised will be donated to who are on the ground providing aid to those in need right now. Jared of has had many contributions for the raffle. Go check out all that has been contributed so far. And I'd like to throw my hat in the ring to up the ante:

- 1x Custom 44 Bikes Steel Marauder SS
- Your choice of powder coat
- 25% off all components for the build

The build will begin immediately when the winning ticket is drawn after discussing details with the winner. This is your choice of a full custom Singlespeed Mountain bike from a frameset up to complete with 25% off all components. The frame is over $3500 value. This is the least I can do for those in need. I hope all of you can help in some way!

PS: Why a Marauder Singlespeed specifically? My one and only "factory rider", Yuri Eliashevsky is a die hard singlespeeder and he was one of many effected by Helene. We've been friends for over 30 years and I'd like to honor him by making this contribution as a singlespeed. Love you buddy and hope you are safe and healthy!!

The Business of Framebuilding //
-
I field A LOT of questions about Framebuilding. Most of those questions center around the “how” of making bicycles. I love this aspect of running a small bike company. But.. that’s not what sells bicycles. Sheer talent, proficiency, or even mastery of one’s craft should not be conflated with one’s ability to turn a profit or make a sale. These are entirely DIFFERENT skills, all of which are required to run a “successful” business.
-
I’ve heard a lot of chatter about my fellow builders discontent with the current market, lack of sales, media spotlight at shows being gobbled up by larger businesses associating themselves with the “handmade” and general frustration. Let me assure everyone: I hear you and my own mind wades into these waters on occasion as well. But running a business like a frame shop takes a stacked set of skills. Just as you pour sweat, time and your own blood into progressing those skills required to build a bicycle to a standard, so must you pour that same sweat, that same time and your own blood into the other skills required of running a business. I’m talking about marketing. I’m talking about sales. I’m talking about design. I’m talking about brand building. If you lack any of those or some are rusty: You need to work on those skills and develop them just like you foster and quench that desire to build a better bicycle.
-
I expand on all of this over on the 44HQ Blog. Go give it a read and think about what your strengths are and what you’ve done to get where you are currently. Then think about your weaknesses and consider what you have and have NOT done to progress those skills. Now take that same energy you used for your strengths and funnel it to your weaknesses to develop those skills. I don’t have all the answers. No one does. Just as there’s an art to building and SELLING bicycles, there’s an art to knowing where to find answers too. Questions? Comments? Hit me up via DM or email any time or drop them in the comments below.
