Long before vintner Jon Wehner was making w**e at Chatham, he was growing up around the vines at his family’s Great Falls Vineyard. His mother, Joan, handled much of the daily work, from pruning to tending the canopy, while raising three boys.

Those early years gave Jon a close-up view of the care and commitment that growing grapes requires. And here they are today, walking the rows together at Chatham.

Family roots run deep around here.

Petit Verdot pump-over!

For the first time since 2012, we’re planning a varietal Petit Verdot, and this year’s harvest gave us plenty to work with. Fruit from our new Petit Verdot vineyard helped bring the total yield to an impressive eight tons.

We’re excited to see how this one develops in the cellar.

Celebrate the last Sunday of summer with us at the Crush Pad!

Join us this Sunday, September 20 from 2–4 PM for live music from Steel Pennies, Chatham Virginia W**e, and one more laid-back summer afternoon overlooking the vineyard.

Gather your friends, pack a picnic (or enjoy some delicious treats from our tasting room), and raise a glass to a season well spent on Virginia’s Eastern Shore.

Recent harvest snaps 📸

In late August, we harvested an early pick of Merlot destined for Rosé.

Why pick red grapes early? Harvesting before they become fully ripe helps preserve the bright acidity, fresh fruit flavors and lower sugar levels that make Rosé so crisp and refreshing. Once in the cellar, the grapes spend only a short time in contact with their skins, giving the w**e its beautiful pink hue without the deeper color and heavier tannins of a red w**e.

A lighter, brighter expression of Merlot begins right here in the vineyard.

One of these subjects is 26 years old. Can you guess which - Jon or the grapes 😏

Our 26-year-old Merlot vines are shining bright here on Virginia’s Eastern Shore. Time is the greatest teacher, and these grapes are a beautiful reflection of all these vines (and our team) have learned along the way.

They carry the distinct “Chatham cherry” note that speaks to this place and shines through in both our Merlot-based Rosé and varietal Merlot red.
