🚨 Don’t let the snow fool you. Virginia’s drought is expanding, and the Southern region is already burning. 🚨

The ground might look damp from recent winter weather, but the underlying reality is critical. State officials have just expanded drought advisories, confirming that surface moisture is deceptive.

Here are the current facts as of late February 2026:

• The Hard Numbers: A drought warning is now in effect for 39 counties and 16 cities across the Commonwealth, with another 44 counties and 15 cities under a drought watch.

• The Snowmelt Illusion: Once the snow vanishes, dead brush and leaves dry out incredibly fast under the spring sun and wind. A wet morning can easily turn into extreme fire danger by the afternoon.

• The Southern Forecast & Current Reality: The National Interagency Fire Center is forecasting above-normal fire potential expanding across the Southern U.S. as we head into March. We are already seeing this worst-case scenario play out—extreme fire weather has triggered widespread Red Flag Warnings, and massive blazes like the 283,000+ acre Ranger Road Fire on the Oklahoma/Kansas border are actively burning, alongside dozens of large, uncontained fires in Texas and Florida.

• 4 PM Burn Law: Because of these rapidly changing conditions and dry fuels, Virginia’s 4 PM Burning Law is strictly enforced.

Conditions are shifting fast. Stay aware, check the wind, and respect the law whether you are doing yard cleanup or managing acreage.

National Weatherperson’s Day

In our line of work, the "Weatherperson" is our MVP. From wind direction to relative humidity, accurate forecasts are what keep our prescribed burns safe and effective. 🌬️🌡️

Huge thanks to the meteorologists who help us protect our communities and forests!

Groundhog Day prediction? Early spring. 🌸
NIFC Fire Prediction? Early fire season. 🔥

The latest data shows fire activity is already trending well above the 10-year average. If you look at the maps for February and March, you’ll see red "Above Normal" potential creeping across the South.

Landowners: Now is the critical window for fuels management and establishing defensible space before the season fully heats up. Don't wait until the smoke is in the air to think about property protection.

Contact Blue Ridge Fire Resources to discuss your land management plan today.

Six more weeks of winter or an early spring? Either way, we’re keeping a close eye on the conditions. While the groundhog looks for his shadow, we’re looking at fuel moisture levels! ❄️🔥

It’s also World Wetlands Day. Healthy wetlands are nature's best firebreaks and critical for our local ecosystem. We’re proud to help landowners manage habitats that keep Virginia beautiful and resilient. 🦆🌱

🚨 URGENT: 24-HOUR WARNING FOR VIRGINIA LANDOWNERS 🚨

We are down to the wire. The deadline to file for a 4 PM Burn Law Exemption is practically here.

What is the exemption? Starting February 15th, Virginia law prohibits open-air burning before 4:00 PM to prevent wildfires. This rule is strict. However, as Certified Prescribed Burn Managers, Blue Ridge Fire Resources can apply for a waiver that allows us to burn your land during the day.

Why do you need it? Without this exemption, we are forced to conduct all burns in the late evening. ❌ Limited Daylight: We run out of time to manage large acreage. ❌ Limited Control: We lose the ability to use specific daytime weather patterns that make for a safer, cleaner burn.

Why act TODAY? These exemption requests are due to the State Forester by January 31st. We need to get your property information into the system NOW to ensure you are eligible for spring burning.

Do not wait until Monday. It will be too late.

Tired of the ticks? 🔥🐜

It’s a common question: "What are the benefits of a prescribed burn besides clearing brush?" One of the biggest answers is Pest Control.

High-intensity heat from a managed burn significantly reduces the population of ticks, chiggers, and other parasites that live in the leaf litter and tall grass. By cleaning up the "duff" layer where these pests over-winter, you create a safer, more enjoyable environment for your family and your pets.

Safer land. Healthier habitat. Fewer pests.

The holidays are wrapping up—is it time to unwrap your land? 🌲📦

Over the years, many properties in the Blue Ridge become "choked out" by invasive brush, fallen limbs, and vine growth. Not only does this make your woods impossible to walk through, but it also creates a dangerous fuel load for wildfires.

Start 2026 with a clean slate. Our Hazard Fuel Reduction services use mechanical thinning and prescribed fire to clear the mess, protect your timber, and make your acreage usable again.

📞 Give us a call at (434) 609-1579 to schedule a site assessment for the new year.
