People who pay, pay attention. I learned this from Michael Hyatt and it changed how I think about free content.

When someone makes a payment, they're invested - they show up, they do the work, they want the solution. A lot of business owners think giving everything away for free is the best way to serve people.

But here's what I've seen after 12 years: when you give something away for free, people often don't value it. People with skin in the game show up at a much greater level.

Are you giving away too much for free in your business?

100% responsibility, 100% of the time. This mantra is tough, and I'm not going to lie about that.

But here's what it means in practice: if a team member is underperforming, I hold the responsibility - because I'm the one who recruited them, interviewed them, and hired them. The human thing to do is blame someone else when things go wrong. But the more your business grows, the more you have to accept that every single decision is ultimately yours.

What would shift in your business if you truly owned 100% of every outcome?

I learned this mantra in my lawyer days and it has never been more relevant. Make hay while the sun shines.

If you're doing something that's making you revenue and generating profit right now, you need to triple down on it. There is no guarantee the same thing will keep working in the next three years, especially with AI disrupting so many industries.

When it's working is exactly the time to squeeze every last bit of juice from it - not the time to coast.

What's working in your business right now that you should be tripling down on?

05/29/2026

Here's what nobody tells you about growing a business - the exact strategies that got you to your current revenue level are probably not going to get you to the next one. You'll keep doing what's always worked, wondering why it stops working.

The most successful business owners understand you have to switch gears completely and stay nimble and flexible.

What worked for you at one level that you had to let go of to reach the next?

I once had a coach tell me something I'll never forget. He said: Look, normally I never tell you what to do. I only ask questions to help you find your own answers. But this time, I'm telling you. Don't go hire someone expensive because no one is coming to save you. You've got to figure this out yourself.

As business owners, our temptation is always the same. If I just pay this person enough money, they'll fix it for me. But it's our responsibility to fix our own business issues.

Sometimes the advice you need most isn't a new strategy. It's hearing that the answer is already inside you.

What's the most honest piece of advice someone's given you about your business?

05/25/2026

One year I thought it was a great idea to join a $30,000 mastermind AND a $53,000 mastermind AND hire a one-on-one coach for $4,500 a month. All at the same time.

Our profitability dropped dramatically. And it wasn't just the payments. I got completely confused because all three leaders were saying different things. I believed in all of them, but their advice didn't reconcile. I remember thinking, am I just stupid?

The reality is there are many approaches that can work in business. But you only need one approach that works. You don't need three.

Have you ever followed too many leaders at once?

Remember when the advice in online business was to create one offer and sell it for five to ten years? If a launch flopped, you'd analyze it, tweak one thing, and run it again. Rinse and repeat for a decade.

That advice today will destroy your business. Consumers have so many choices now. If something isn't working, you need to stop pouring time into reviving it and start creating a more aligned offer for your actual audience right now.

Have you had to scrap an offer that used to work and build something new?

I made $50 in my first year in business. Here's every season I've been through since.

Five seasons. Each one builds on the last, and each one demands something different from you.

Some of these I moved through quickly. One of them cost me $300,000 in recurring revenue I chose to walk away from. Another one taught me that only 2% of a cold audience will ever become a client.

This carousel covers all five with the specific moments that defined each one for me.

Here's a stat that should make every business owner pause: 42% of Americans who believe they've seen AI-generated marketing content said it gave them a negative perception of the brand.

Your customers are on their guard. They're looking at every message and asking, is this AI or is this real?

If you're using AI in your business, keep a human in the loop. Make sure your messages actually sound like they come from you. And please stop calling AI tools "employees." AI is a tool. An employee is a human being.

Are you using AI in your marketing? How do you make sure it still sounds like you?

I made $50 in my first whole calendar year in business. Six years later, I also turned off $300,000 in recurring revenue to start something new. 12 years from the start, I’m in another Pivot Season.

This week's newsletter is about the five seasons every business goes through and what each one demands from you.

Comment SEASONS and I'll send it your way.
