Working remotely while camping is real work
On any usual workweek, many of us pencil pushers trudge our weary bodies back and forth to the office each day as we dream of Friday afternoon. So, when stay-at-home orders were issued across the country during the Covid19 pandemic, office workers were told to work from home. Oh, some of us were absolutely thrilled with the prospect of working in our pajamas and lounging on the couch with the laptop.
I was one of the most enthusiastic about working at home. "Now, I can take my laptop and work anywhere," I naively thought. "How wonderfully perfect it's going to be to work while camping," I said to myself. I made reservations, packed the pop-up and headed to the woods.
Camping and office work have a complicated relationship, I've learned. Yes, it is possible, and I did it, but not without some serious barriers. It was wonderful to set up my "office" in the great outdoors; the breezy, early morning was perfect for coffee at the picnic table as I turned on my laptop to read my emails. That's where the real struggle began, and I learned a few things:
1. Check to see if your campground has internet or wi-fi access if you have to attend virtual meetings or respond to email
2. Bring a comfortable chair; sitting on a picnic bench for 8 hours was not really nice
3. Tell your boss where you are at before your partner posts it on social media
4. While sitting in a sunny spot seems nice in the morning, it's not so nice in the heat of the afternoon
5. Bugs and things fly, crawl and bite
6. Hiking several hours during "lunch break" and then sitting on picnic bench is not wonderful
