Getting ready to cape your own antelope? Chuck put together this step-by-step video showing how to properly cape one for a head mount.

It’s a little lengthy, but there’s a lot of good information in here that could save you from making a costly mistake in the field.

Apprentice Spotlight 🦌

Since May, Brittney has been learning the craft of taxidermy here at Still Life Taxidermy. Her eagerness to learn and willingness to jump right in have made her a great addition to the shop.

This Idaho buck is Brittney’s own harvest and served as her hands-on project for learning the process of a head mount from start to finish.

There’s no better way to learn this craft than to get in there and do it. We’re looking forward to watching Brittney continue to develop her skills and see where this takes her.

This is just the beginning.

TUESDAY Tip from the shop: Take Your Time Choosing a Pose

A quality mount is more than putting a hide on a form.

The pose, expression, ear position, and eye placement all work together to capture the character of the animal. A good taxidermist takes the time to study the species and select a form that fits the animal—not just the easiest option.

The right pose is what brings a mount to life.

TUESDAY Tip from the shop: What to Bring When Dropping Off

When bringing in your animal, always include your tag and hunting license. This is required for processing and helps keep everything documented properly.

It’s also helpful to bring any information about the hunt, such as location and date. This helps us better match the mount style to the animal’s natural characteristics.

A deposit is required at drop-off to secure your spot in the work queue

TUESDAY Tip from the shop: Timing + Skull Cleaning Policy

Timing is everything when it comes to trophy care. The longer an animal sits in warm conditions after harvest, the more the quality of the hide and hair can deteriorate.

If you can’t bring it in right away, freeze it as soon as possible. Make sure it is sealed properly to avoid freezer burn or contamination.

‼️We also offer bug-cleaned skull preparation using dermestid beetles. Skulls that have begun to decay or have had contact with fly blow or larvae are not accepted, as contamination can affect the cleaning process. Dermestid beetles require clean, properly prepared specimens to work effectively.

Proper handling from the beginning leads to the best finished result.

Featured Mount

This antelope holds a little extra meaning around the shop.

Harvested by Chuck Chandler alongside his grandson Wyatt, this was a day spent doing what has always been at the heart of this craft — time outdoors, family, and appreciation for the animals we pursue.

Chuck later completed the mount in his studio, preserving a memory that will last well beyond the day it was taken.

TUESDAY Tip from the shop: Cape Handling Mistakes

One of the most common issues we see is damage to the cape during field dressing. Careless cuts around the neck, brisket, or shoulder area can limit how the mount can be completed later.

Take your time and avoid unnecessary incisions if you plan to have a shoulder mount done. If you’re not experienced, ask someone who is to help during the field process or call Chuck!

A clean cape gives us more options and produces a better final result.

Behind every mount is a story.

This bobcat had become a persistent predator of Chuck’s Daughter, Lyssa’s duck flock before it was legally trapped. As a licensed fur trapper, Chuck understands the importance of responsible predator management, while also having a deep respect for the animals themselves.

This life-size mount was created to honor the beauty of one of North America’s most remarkable predators while preserving the story behind it.
